It may be understandable for the husband to live separately because it could be tough for him to look at her, but it's a complete dick move to not financially and morally support her at least. That means he never loved her to begin with. He also abandoned the child. That's another dick move.

Somebody with an ounce of integrity would have stayed with the wife at first, so she wouldn't feel suicidal after such an incident. Eventually help her find work for disabled folks. Once she's back on track, live separately if that's what he wants, but keep being a parent to the child at least. Ya know, stay on good terms and not be remembered as an asshole who left at the first sign of trouble. It's how spanorces happen generally when people are too immature to work it out.
