Honestly, they probably said something more to the effect of "Thanks, it was great having the President come here to give a speech", the sort of empty and obligatory platitude that only Trump could reinterpret as "Thank you so much, you are the greatest man to ever walk the Earth, and this was the best speech anyone has ever given."
