There's a good video explaining how this scam came to be and why old classic games started selling for really high prices. It all started with those websites that "grade" classic games and start inflating the prices of them which effected the old Classic Nostalgic Game market.
This and lockdown drove the prices up.
I used to collect older games, and at my local retro game shop, I watched overnight how insanely high prices skyrocketed during lockdowns (here in Texas, we had those, but most (all) businesses said wear a mask, were still open).
Basically they saw a grift and took it. And it worked out because holy hell- they made such bank that they bought the two stores next to it and expanded into them.
On the flip side, now that things have gotten back to normal without their prices dropping their store is now just clothes and model statues because no one is gonna pay $200 for a copy of a PS2 game.
