Does anyone ever pay attention to the fact that in 1984, the government was hyper efficient and didn't focus on the great majority of its population (the proles, who outside of the occasional interference were left alone)?
All the concepts of newspeak and such only applied to the Outer Party members, who were segregated from the proles early on through placement tests. Proles weren't forced to have telescreens, they chose to buy them if they wanted to.
So mass surveillance isn't even 1984. Because big brother would consider that to be hideously inefficient.
