It's Indian Americans who were raised here and have typical American accents who are offended. Indians from India either love the character or don't care. The whole controversy stems from this steaming pile of hot garbage:

Was there any controversy before that garbage? I don't think any Indian American who watches the Simpsons would actively hate Apu. And to those who don't watch it, why should they care? They're just using Apu as a scapegoat; that getting rid of him from the show would somehow magically stop people from offending them. I don't get it.
