They have hated his guts for years and years. To pretend you loved him all along just because he is dying would be pretty disingenuous
Reigns as a character is a cancer to the business. Everything revolves around him to the point nearly everyone else suffers or is held back as a result. It's been that way for years. From a business standpoint he taking a step back is the best thing for it. The product needs to breath, to develop without everything being Roman-centric. Character aside, I hope he recovers soon. He comes off as a fighter if anything and when he does return I think the atmosphere surrounding him will change as a result. It may not be for the "right" reasons that it does, but it'll just be enough he'll have gotten through this along with have something of a fresh start.
