that's very true, yes. especially considering that they were unfamiliar with deception and keeping secrets and stuff before they made contact with humanity, since their communication is through thought. so i guess they probably really didn't consider that Luo Ji might be covertly working on some way of getting around their broadcast block. since they don't do ANYTHING covertly. but still, i would think that they'd want to leave no room for an unforced error. maybe that's just my human thought process though, lol.

yes, that whole sequence was so brutal. it didn't affect me to any inordinate amount, but tbh probably only because i had that part as well as some other broad strokes spoiled for me before i even started in on the series, from listening to the Worlds of Speculative Fiction video about the series from the playlist i posted before. it's something that i listen to when i'm out walking and getting my cardio in or when i'm doing my weightlifting routine, so the multitasking does limit how much attention i am giving it, and so i didn't remember all the details that were relayed, but i knew it was going to be something that was described as a microcosm of the dark forest hypothesis itself. so i was somewhat mentally prepared for it. although even so, it was still devastating and brutal. i had the opposite reaction as you, in that i couldn't put the book DOWN. and now i am curious as to whether the surviving ships are going to be a factor at all in Death's End. if there was anything about that that i was spoiled on, i don't remember. it should be interesting if they get word that Earth is safe for now, and just have to be like "well shit, we murdered thousands of our brothers and sisters in arms for no reason, we all could have just headed back together" lol.
