I've never heard anyone under the age of 80 say "colored person." I don't think it's meant with any racist intent, it just sounds weird and archaic.
Describing people of African descent as "black" didn't become a thing until the 60s (or maybe late 50s?) and before then "colored" was the only polite alternative to saying the n-word.
