I don't use colouring books but I do mixed media art, I'd say coloured pencils are best, markers will likely tear up the paper if they're water based, or bleed right through if they're alcohol based, depending on the paper in the books - crayons aren't my thing but I imagine they can leave a waxy texture, rather than a nice smooth finish like with pencils
