Waiver a prison sentence on reason of insanity, as the dude is clearly out of his head if he thought pointing a gun at someone he cared for was a reasonable action, regardless of whether he thought it was unloaded. Place him in a mental hospital for ten years, and castrate him to prevent breeding. You would not want them to pass such hereditary stupidity. Also issue a lifetime firearms ban, and place on twenty years probation, with limited access to video-gaming. Lastly, grant him an electronic plushie shaped like a gun that imitates firearm sounds when squeezed to maximize PTSD therapy recovery.
