Basically it's like texting but pictures you send are temporary and delete themselves after you view them. I really don't know why it caught on when texting was already thing but I guess it makes it really easy to send and receive pics. It also intoduced, or at least popularlized the idea of "stories:" pictures and videos that last 24 hours that all your friends can see, basically a way to say "hey guys, look what I'm doing. Aren't I interesting?" It also popularized those stupid filters with the dog ears or flower crowns that you've probably seen used exessively by every woman between the ages of 12 and 30.

Contrary to what all the memes spread by old people will tell you, Snapchat is not just for teens to send nudes. I'm 25 and I use it regularly, not because I like it more than plain ol' texting, but because everyone I know prefers it. I mostly send memes, funny things I see, and pictures of my cats to my friends.
