The only way it was going to resolved without a ton of people complaining was if Trump and Biden secretly got gay married on Election Night and became Co-Presidents.

And even then, homophobes will still complain.

We're basically at the point no where no matter who is running or who wins, at least 40% of the country is going to generally be annoyed (if not over half). That's not really a strong mandate for political unity.

Politics have been polarizing more and more for the last 25 years or so. The Internet dramatically accelerated that process, and the almost unavoidable nature of echo-chamber existence at this point means it's only going to get worse.

People complained because they claimed that Trump turned politics into a disrespective shit-show, but honestly, that was more just the natural outgrowth of people who've spent years being assholes online slowly extending that attitude to other facets of their lives. It's going to continue to get worse, not better.

There's a difference between 'annoyed' and 'outright hostile'.

If Trump won we'd have four more years of Russia conspiracy theories with democrats trying to blame him for everything from the rise of the Delta variant to being the being invading their garbage can at night to steal food scraps. If Biden had at least lost horribly they would have said he was a terrible candidate and/or blamed Harris as a poor choice for running mate; but that would have at least been undisputed.

Likewise, had Trump lost undisputed the right would have accepted that people really detested the man and the only people who liked him were basically uber-nationalists who got a ton of media coverage.

But that's not what happened. Instead we had five states seem to go Trump at first then flip Biden after a lengthy series of lawsuits and acts that many on the right consider to be 'shady' at the least. Currently a lot of pro-Trump people feel that, not only did Trump actually win, but that the government basically defied the will of the people in favor of gathering elitist power under the Democrat banner. They feel that the government not only no longer represents them but is potentially actively hostile towards them.

Of course many on the left, likewise, see the government as being only one step away from being actively hostile towards them as well. That's why we saw things like them discussing west-coast succession and so-forth. Because, had Trump won, legitimate or not, they felt the government would not only no longer represent them but be actively hostile towards them.

Both parties are full of people who believe that the government is either actively hostile towards them or the reason it's not actively hostile towards them is because they are in power. That's like trying to balance on a bicycle where both wheels are terrifyingly loose and about to fly off. It seems inevitably that the government will come crashing down if it can't change that soon.
