I thought the 2003 Shredder was great personally. Was he an Utrom in the original comic?

Oh. Well that's disappointing considering this adaption was supposed to be the faithful one.
By the way, how was the 2003 generally received? All the reviews I read are good but I remember a lot of trashing alongside the praises.
