Your main initial goals are to get each class to level 10 to unlock all basic card, and then get a class to level 20 to unlock Tavern Brawl.
Try aiming for rank 15 by the end of your first month for some golden cards. It should be easy without paying money.
If you do want to pay a little for a quick boost, the welcome bundle is a good deal and cheap.
