And its ironic how the only Mother game where the mother plays a major role is part 3, and, well, its still ironic for reasons.
ACKCHYUALLY the mother does play a major role in Mother 1: Giygas/Giegue was raised on Earth by Maria and George (Ninten's great grandparents). The song you learn throughout the game and then sing to him in the final battle is the lullaby Maria used to sing to him. It reminds him of her and causes him to have an emotional breakdown and leave. Maria is his mother and the mother the game is named after. That's how I interpreted it anyway.
