How does a serial number help? You give your roommate a $10 because you ordered takeout together, he gives it to a buddy for an old TV, how does the government know he ever had it?
is not faseable for a small amount but
the money can be traced back from where you got it from first
say you got the 10$ from the bank they can tell the police that you withdrew the money from them
and from there they can follow the trail
then again this is mostly used for big crimes investigations and not on small crimes
