Normal people, have you never accidentally added too much to a stew? I was reading jalapenos are mild when I was thinking about making a recipe with jalapeno so I get one and try a slice before putting it in. The pain was immediate and severe it took almost an hour to get my sense of taste back after being assaulted by the spice of a raw jalapeno. I can't imagine how much worse spicier peppers are.
There is no such thing as too much black pepper. Jalapenos are mild. Eating a whole jalapeno is rather uneventful. This is why people make fun of Americans. But if you can't handle a jalapeno, yes you probably want to avoid anything legitimately hot.

pepper spray.
Is derived from capsaicin, the compound found in hot peppers. Black pepper is from peppercorns, which derive their heat from piperine. Pure capsaicin is at least ~80x the strength of pure piperine.
