It broke down last week, and I finally got it into service today. They checked it out, and the entire engine needs replaced.

The warranty runs out on 3/11, so I'm getting a full engine for free--just 3 days before I'd have to pay $10k+.

Holy shit.

That's a good car breaking down in an honest timeframe.

Most of the cars in my family are Japanese in origin (Toyota, Honda, Subaru) and I've never heard of an engine failing.

Just glad your shit was still covered!

This stuff is designed to stop working almost right after the warranty expires.
This is why I don't buy American makes. They want a lot of excess $$$ so they con people into a replacement cycle by magic overpriced junk instead of building vehicles to last. They want it even shorter than five years, but know they can't get away with that while foreign brands build better cars.

Glad you got lucky, Tony! Hopefully the new engine lasts you another five years.

Youve never heard of an engine failing? Thats wild, one of my first cars was a Toyota (automatic) and the transmission died the first year I had it.

Didnt expect the Chevy hate lol, this is the first issue Ive had with my car in 4 years, and actually because its hybrid its still technically drivable, just limited range.

Anyway, what happened was a spark plug came unsealed and the oil pressure did some crazy shit and caused further damage. Doesnt really reflect on the car as a whole.

Im just happy Im getting a new engine for free!

Also, theres a recall on the battery, so Im getting one of those for free too. Itll be like a whole new car, Im excited.

This literally reflects on the car as a whole. Most cars don't do this

Yup, oil pressure dropped -> timing chain overheated -> timing chain slipped and/or broke -> your interference engine shredded itself.

LMAO thinking this doesnt reflect on the car.

Was it used? If it was an old car with lots of mileage than ok.

The engine of a barely five year old car should not catastrophically fail unless it has been seriously abused.

I am really bad with oil changes for my Hyundai. I drive it at least 6-7k between changes, usually more. The engine often burns oil around then and starts vibrating like it's grinding itself down, or stuck on some thick gunk. After I put a few quarts of oil in there it gets better. Then I keep driving it until it happens again. At some point I'll remember to do an oil change and it's smooth for a few months. I've been doing this for around 60k miles.

And still my engine never failed. Americans cars are absolute garbage.

As a person who used to be in the car business the only make that legitimately never had any severe issues(With proper maintenance of course) were Hondas.

Trade it in for a 2022-2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Youll be good for the next 20 years. They mastered the CVT so nothing to really worry about. Just keep up with scheduled maintenance. 2022 version is the last one to have a manual transmission.

For all the crap you've been through lately, you deserve to have something go your way (would've been nice if the engine were still intact, but this is a nice silver medal).
