It kinda depends on what all is sandwiched between the slices of bread.

If I'm doing something simple like a BLT or PB&J, then multi-grain bread. If I'm doing a grilled cheese or a caned chicken mixed with mayo (and either bits of cheese or bits of dried cranberry), then wheat will suffice. However, if I'm using enough sauce, meat, and cheese, then I'll probably go with sourdough.

A Reuben demands pumpernickel. Peanut butter needs white. BLT needs toasted white. Ham and cheese needs wheat or rye. Pizza boats are best with English muffins, but good with crusty French or Italian bread. Hamburgers or hot dogs/chili dogs with buns.

And so on, different breads for different sandwiches.

Wheat or some sort of multigrain or ciabatta.

I used to eat strictly white and thought wheat was gross, but then started to eat wheat to try to be "healthier" and now its 100x better than white could ever be.
