Have you ever been in a rotating restaurant before?

5 y/o Charlie Holt from Charlotte, North Carolina was killed at a popular rotating restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia after he suffered a severe head injury when his head got STUCK between the table and the wall when it was rotating at Sun Dial Restaurant!!

He was visiting with his family when they stopped to have lunch that offers amazing views from the top view

The Sun Dial spins slowly to offer a 360 view of the city's skyline and it appeared that Charlie got lodged between a fixed wall and the moving table.

The family asks for prayers and privacy right now to come to terms with the accident. They were the last of the customers to leave the restaurant when he wandered away from his parents to look at the views himself as the hotel staff scrambled to pull his head out after realizing he got stuck there in the narrow 5 inches of space.

Police said "His whole body was caught in between maybe 4 or 5 inches of space and his head took the brunt of the injury, it crushed his little small body. The amount of people who were helping were amazing. They were moving furniture, pulling chairs even though they were bolted to the floor trying to pull his head out"

They pulled him out and were eventually able to free him but it was too late as he was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital

The Sun Dial is now closed until further notice.

Have you ever been into a rotating restaurant before?

What an absolutely heartbreaking thing for that family.
Sounds like a design flaw.

Can't say I've ever visited a rotating restaurant. Still as unfortunate as this accident is it may make folk more aware of the dangers of leaving kids unattended. Even more so in a place where it could be dangerous.

Very sad.

I hope we can continue to have fancy rotating restaurants though.

That really sucks.

I've always wanted to go to this place since I was little, hopefully they can open again after adding some more security measures to keep this from happening.

I was thinking about this. Sounded like the tables are bolted to the floor or so heavy they don't budge easily.

Technically I'd say the blame lies with the interior designer or architect.

Though not to shift blame from us engineers, we do sometimes do stupid stuff in the name of efficiency. Friend of my was an Airforce mechanic and he regularly complained how the engineers failed to design the work space of the plane to have enough room to work in. It's like, what good does minimizing space do if the mechanic can barely access the space.

Compared to some countries though our design codes can be pretty strict at times almost to the point of being overkill. That or some plan checkers are just arses.

Not really the issue as the supports and/or table could be reshaped, or move as they come near eachother if they want to get real fancy. It should be fairly obvious where pinch points occur and this was overlooked.

Have you ever been in the vicinity of a child? It would take about two seconds for a child to position themselves between a table and a wall. While being watched. Because it's a child.

Poor kid. I feel bad for the family.

Typical potd, blaming the engineering instead of the parents who let their 5 year old wander around unsupervised.

Honestly I think playing the blame game in the event of a tragic accident where people don't know all the details is a shitty thing in general.

Speaking as a parent, I wouldn't be so quick to cast that judgment. It only takes a moment of distraction for you to lose track of your kid. Even the best, most attentive parents have had that moment of panic. 99% of the time you never hear about it because nothing bad happens. You only hear about it when tragedy occurs.

That sucks. I hope the family does well.

It's a shame that there weren't any safety measures against this, but it couldn't be helped.

I tried to be a bit more tactful then this but yeah. Can't take your eyes of kids for a second tbh.

People seem to be equating this with parents who just let their children run around the restaurant the whole time they're there. They're not really the same at all.
