Thumb. Pointer finger is the "right" way to do it, but if you use your thumb first, you can just go from one end of your hand to the other.

I start with both of my hands closed, then open one digit at a time, starting with my left thumb and ending with my right thumb. (I'm from the U.S., FYI.)
