They were brought back in NSMBW after much fan demand. Then they were subsequently put in NSMB2 and NSMBU in the same capacity with extremely similar battles, and people got weary of them. Then they were put into Mario Kart, taking up a lot of the newcomer space in that game which pissed some people off and they wound up getting in Smash as well. At this point the general consensus is too much Koopalings.

Personally I want to see them get a 3D outing.

I always liked Iggy. He's the first one you fight in SMW and he's also sort of in the movie, too.

I find the claim that people got weary of them to be highly dubious. However, having so many in Mario Kart I can understand as being an issue. Personally, instead of using the whole lot each game, I'd prefer one or two to appear as supporting villains instead.

Personally I want Ludwig to emerge as a main antagonist for a game, or at least a secondary antagonist role like BJ would have.

That's a spin-off that's grown so popular so as to sell better than the mainline stuff. It's in its own category from other spin-offs like the RPGs and Mario Partys and whatnot. Even if you accept it as a spin-off in the same vein as Superstar Saga, it still doesn't undermine my stating that their comeback was in NSMBW.
