I never did but a lot of kids did, seem like the more affluent the school district the higher the perc. are of kids...

....who play musical instruments
Ya, who didn't...

Oh wait, we had regular music class so everyone got to learn how to use xylophones and a bunch of other things.

Nope. In elementary school we had music classes but I don't remember actually playing anything. I def didn't in high school or anything.
Saxophone and bassoon. Recently I've taken up keyboard.

I think he was asking whether we LEGITIMATELY played an instrument, like in the band program. I doubt elementary-level playing of xylophones and recorders and such counts.
Yes; in elementary school we played a recorder in music class for a couple months.

Played the flute for a bit. Always wanted to learn the guitar but didn't have the patience or perseverance.

I played the guitar, wasn't very good at it
We had a choice between art or band and art meant I never had to perform at another Christmas concert again, so I took art.

The only options were 1. band and only band or 2. every other elective, so no.
No, except the mandatory recorder unit in fourth grade and violin for a week. It wasn't my thing.

It's not just affluent kids, since a lot of elementary and middle schools have instruments in their music classes. I learned to play the recorder rather badly as a result.

Recorder and handbells in elemenary school, violin and clarinet in middle school. I didn't really care about any of it. Handbells were an extracurricular school thing. I think it was my parents idea, they had me do a lot of that kind of thing when I was young because dad worked a lot and mom's schedule had her switching which shift she worked constantly.

yeah a friend talked me into band class so he'd have a friend in the class only to not re join that year. kinda pissed me off, but it was an ok experience all around even if I got forced into a particular instrument I had no interest in originally.

In the mid 1990s I was a drummer in high school band. Me and some other students had to use stuff such as the snare drums, one big bass drum, a cowbell and there was a xylophone but noone ever used it which was a bummer
I was a mediocre trumpet player.

I still am a mediocre trumpet player.
I hated doing drum rolls but I was a decent drummer anyway then I got tired of band after my sophomore year.
I tried violin in 4th grade. The teacher recommended that I quit. I never touched another musical instrument for the rest of my life. I would like to learn guitar though someday.

Yes, viola. Want to pick it back up but I need a new one.

DorkLink said I could borrow his signature so I did (see below):
I played clarinet over the summer between elementary and middle school (I think), but decided I wasn't interested in it. I thought school band instruments were lame. I would've been interested in piano or guitar, but you gotta do that outside of school and pay money I didn't have.
Piano, trumpet and Alto sax.

A lot of the more affluent parents wanted their kids in our music program since we were winning our annual regional stuff consistently. Our director went off to a university and then this terrible guy took his job and didn't do what it took to nurture new students, the music program died within three years.

Nope. If they had offered to teach piano during school i probably wouldve taken the music class but that wasnt on the list. Probably shouldve taken music anyways since the other option was art which i was and still am god awful at but eh.

I played the violin from 6th grade through 12th grade and even a little bit in collage. Unfortunately I didn't play consistently enough so never really improved. Kinda wish I chose the cello or piano though.

Interesting but how was it involved in your studies for it to be mandatory?

Maybe he doesn't know his instruments very well and meant recorder. Pretty much everyone I know had to learn recorder

Interesting. Kinda wish some schools do this in-place of P.E.

P.E is also mandatory

I do think it should be aswell, people live sedentary lifes enough after school... at least let kids have some healthy habits

Percussion. In 5th grade we had the choice between PE or band.
