Felt very Disney channel. I made it halfway into episode 1 and couldn't keep going

Whenever someone sings fansa and they don't input their name instead of mona at the mona-beam part I'm like "Are you even a real aidoru?".
The 90s are such a boring and tired setting, I honestly don't get the appeal. At least That 90s Show can get away with it (as a sequel to the original series), but for shows like Fresh Off The Boat it makes absolutely no sense.

I think the problem is that 1995 wasn't much different than today. You had video games, computers, mobile phones, hundreds of cable TV channels, and the Internet. Cars still pretty much look the same.

But if you compare the 70s and 1998, the year That 70s Show came out, there's a HUGE difference. Personal computers were almost unheard of, and the Internet as we know it didn't exist. The only home video games were things like Pong and the Atari 2600, and cellular phones were huge and expensive devices the size of a suitcase. Cars were boxy and angular. Cable TV was fairly rare and most homes only got a handful of channels. It's almost like an alien world.

I love the 90s but I would hate to see a show take advantage of the nostalgia, hopefully the show isnt too bad but it certainly does look very Disney channel-ish

For what it's worth I haven't watched the new show, but I think people are placing too much emphasis on the setting. That 70's Show wasn't about the 70's; it was just about a bunch of teenagers that happened to take place in the past.

Also I think people may have been expecting too much in the best case scenario. I definitely enjoyed the original show, but it wasn't exactly high quality, and it was also kinda weird in the beginning. If you give a show some time to get comfortable and appreciate what it is, you'll be much more likely to enjoy it, as opposed to expecting lightning in a bottle from day one.

It made perfect sense since it's based on the life of Eddie Huang who grew up in the 90s

1995 is pre-9/11, a major international culture shift.

Was it, though? Airport security is really the only thing that changed for me.

The Sopranos certainly changed and became an entirely different show

Would you say it was better or worse than That 80's Show?
The problem with the internet today is that it's filled with entire generations that did not grow up with the great wisdom of the Wyld Stallyns.

That 80s show wasn't funny and the characters sucked, but it felt like a that 70s show spin off. This one felt like a worse fuller house but in the foreman house. I didn't make it very far. I could maybe give it more of a chance but I don't have high hopes it'll get better.

The 90's Show has more or less identical humor to the 70's Show. When was the last time you actually watched That 70s Show? .....right, that's the problem: the original had its moment but it's pretty stale.

And, as stated, there's really nothing notable about the 90s you could see people using and feel terribly nostalgic about.

Just watch Saved by the Bell, Boy Meets World or The Fresh Prince of Bell Air, or any other notable 90s sitcom.

Anyone saying theres nothing nostalgic or unique about the 90s was probably like 3 years old in the 90s

This. Netflix is incapable of creating worthwhile sitcoms, and blatant nostalgia-pandering shows are rarely good. So it was a bad combination right from the start.

Nostalgia.

That's literally it.

It's pretty much the foundation of the original series as well, and tons of other things (like Grease or American Graffiti or even Back to the Future). "20-30 years ago" has been an extremely popular genre for about 50 years now. It's just the window being exploited that keeps moving forward.

The real problem is, most people don't really have a ton of fond nostalgia for the 1990s, and I'm not sure anyone has all that much nostalgia for the 2000s... so the nostalgia train may be coming to the end of the line. Especially with modern streaming and Internet content kind of killing all pretense of shared pop culture as-is.

I'm saying it and I was older than most of you in the 90s.

90s kids are nostalgic for toys and cartoons (and stuff like Power Rangers), and maybe a handful of games/franchises like Pokemon, but a lot of 90s stuff is so cringe no one wants to remember it, and the decade as a whole sort of lacks the exploitable cultural "feel" that the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s had.

It makes it hard to do "period piece" style shows or films to exploit that nostalgia. It's why Captain Marvel tried and everyone mostly made fun of it. There's not really a robust vein to mine there.

The 90s were great. I was 11-20 in the 90s: those were my prime years.

That said, they were great mostly because the culture wars hadn't really started up, the internet was coming online and exploding options for everything (but hadn't yet connected all of the wackos), and movies/etc were in a good spot. Society was healthier. (No, not perfect of course, but much healthier regardless)

None of that can really get played up well in a sitcom. I could get a cheap laugh from seeing a modem start up or early internet stupidity, I suppose, but it's not as visually interesting as 70s nostalgia. (And modems are played for laughs every 15 minutes or so as is)

All the time and it's still epic minus the terrible season where Eric left and we got "obviously not Eric but he's perfect" guy.
