Nintendo's had voice chat in various forms since the WiiU. The WiiU's option was a room-wide mic that was sold separately and nobody particularly liked, and the Switch went through the Nintendo Online phone app instead of having an option incorporated into the hardware, but it's still been around.

I will never use the C button on the Nintendo Switch 2
Golden State Warriors: 2022 NBA champions
The 2024 Game of the Year: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (Sorry Balatro)
I don't use the voice chat in any console I've ever owned, but I also have no interest in buying a Switch 2.

I doubt it, mostly because I almost never use voice chat at all, unless it's my buddys playing Civ 7 or whatnot on the PC. It's a welcome feature, tho, could definitely use it playing friends in Smash or MK.

The Wii (not U) had voice chat as well. It was a separate microphone thingie called Wii Speak that you had to buy. There was a dedicated Wii Speak Channel, and several games supported it as well, including Animal Crossing: City Folk, NHL 2K10/2K11, The Conduit, and Tetris Party Deluxe.

No. I play single player games anyway.

Give me a little while, I'm writing an essay about it on Google docs and I'm going to link it to anyone who asks me this question. But, in short, it's the fact that game save data is stored on the console and not the SD card or game cartridge, so if your console ever breaks or gets stolen you're SOL. Cloud saves are unreliable, not all games support them, and they can still delete them at any time. Didn't have to worry about any of that shit or paying for internet with the DS. The switch is a downgrade and it's only purpose is to leech money from people. I'd rather get a steam deck and emulate games.

I don't think anyone's going to disagree that having more options for local backups would be an improvement, but being so angry about that as to write an essay seems like a bit of an overreaction.

Ugh, not even. Unless it's an MMO, I don't need to ruin my immersion with voice chat. Probably not even getting a Switch 2 anyway.

bro just buy and play what you want

the fact that people complain about something that they don't like and don't want boggles my fucking mind

I'll definitely use it with friends. It's 50/50 if I'm in the mood to voice-chat with strangers, although idk if Nintendo is going in the 'chat with strangers' direction or just friends.

PS5 also saves save data to the console's hard drive.

Which is also dumb because if the console breaks you're data is still gone. imo all consoles should at least give you the option of also saving backup on a memory card, and really I don't see why game companies don't do this when it's an opportunity for them to make even more revenue selling memory/sd cards or backup drives. The PS5 isn't as bad as the switch, though, because the PS5 isn't a handheld console and thus has less of a chance of breaking. Plus, it's easier to get the PS5 repaired and the hardware that saves your game data is more sturdy than what's in the switch. Meanwhile getting the switch repaired and trying to recover data from it is a nightmare. And it's not like the switch was very well built to begin with and had a low chabce of breaking. Remember the joycon drift? The errors? The update that fucked up people's data? Saving game data solely on the console with no option for external storage is bad enough, but doing that with a handheld was such a braindead move.

While I'm at it, I think consoles that only allow download games instead of physical copies are also trash, so comparing the switch to the ps5 is like comparing cat shit and dog shit to me.

You can quite literally back up PS5 data to a USB drive.

A few years ago I played an old N64 version of Banjo Kazooie, but the save battery died halfway through and I lost my save. I just started over (on a different version), it sucks but it's really not that big of a deal tbh...

I had a 1019 GC memory card corrupt on me, which had pretty much every game's data saved on it (aside from the handful of files I couldn't transfer from my smaller cards, like my PSO characters or AC town). That was really frustrating, but I can't say I still care about it or feel like I lost anything really meaningful. There was a time when I clung to all of my save files desperately, but perhaps because I've played so many more games since then, I no longer really care about anything except what I'm currently working on. If I've finished with a game, odds are I'm never coming back to that file except possibly to use it to start a NG+ run (where applicable).

Of course, exceptions do exist, like Animal Crossing, but on the whole the risk of losing that data is low enough that I don't really care. Realistically, I'm probably never going back to my AC island either, except possibly for a bit of nostalgia.

I'll use the voice chat, but not the screen share or camera. I enjoyed the Nintendo phone app for voice chat previously. Discord is fine and all but sometimes not everyone has it installed on a decive that they can use while playing other games. I still use PSN voice chat as well. Discord is purely for PC gaming for me.
