Oblivion or Expedition 33

Poll of the Day

po: why can't we have nice turn based jrpgs like we used to back in the snes and ps1 era

I've literally never said this, you probably need to throttle back on the drugs.

I don't wax nostalgic about turn-based RPGs because I've always been fine with "action RPGs" and "hack-and-slash" style RPG stuff like Diablo or the Dark Alliance games. Nor was I one of the whiners when Mass Effect 2/3 and Dragon Age 2 went more "action" versus turn-based. I was fine with the original Kingdom Hearts game (and my eventual growing distaste for that franchise had almost nothing to do with gameplay). I don't really consider turn-based action to be an innate mechanic that somehow makes games better. Plenty of turn-based games were also shit. I've never been nostalgic about it, or demanded that it come back and "save" modern gaming.

If anything, I wax nostalgic for well-written dialogue trees like early BioWare games or even point-and-click adventure games. I don't want 1980s JRPGs back, I want 1998-2013 (give or take) WRPGs back. For every BGII that I loved, there was also a Deus Ex. For every KotOR there was a Jade Empire.

I loathe FF8 and dislike P5 more for the story, characters, and aesthetics more than anything to do with their gameplay. Even with the Soulsborn games, while the "frustration gameplay" is a large part of why I dislike them, the aesthetics and tone are also part of the problem for me. If a setting feels like Game of Thrones fucked HP Lovecraft, I'm probably going to lose interest in it really quickly.
