I'm glad the new season is focusing less on drama and toxic relationships, but a lot of the humor just isn't funny . not a fan of adult animated shows still being written as if it's for edgy kids. Regular Show/Close Enough/Dan Vs/Disney's Recess/Inside Job are shows intended for adults but can be funny for both kids and adults :C

I got tired of it before all the Roiland drama. People like to say that it got worse after that, but the show was already suffering by season 3 with inconsistency.

So you didn't catch the part where it was mostly Mordecai wanting Margaret and trying to do everything to get her, but finding CJ in the end? Also, there were several episodes about Muscle Man and his girlfriend Starla, about Muscle Man having to meet her parents, about Starla leaving MM alone for a few months so that they don't 'smother' each other. That show was almost as relationship heavy as Futurama (but still had good episodes like Sleep Fighter or Guys night).

Last season was great, aside from the first episode being a dud.

This season is good so far. Hell, the Easter episode was amazing. It's nice to see some actual character growth, because it allows for them to hit different beats Like Morty taking the initiative to space the shiny space coal Rick was obsessed with to get them out of a stand-off, and Rick not being a complete jerk about it afterwards.

I was talking to a friend about how I only liked Season 1 because it felt alot different, then he pointed out that I was actually just talking about the Pilot and I realized that's the only Episode I actually remember and was shocked at how unfunny the rest of it always was. Then there's the whole Sezechaun sauce debacle which made it seem like the fanbase is filled with disgusting incel manchildren and I haven't so much as wanted to touch anything Roiland made even before his allegations.
I love every season, and theres only a couple episodes I outright dislike

I usually ended up referencing the 1st epside after the pilot because I thought that one was the best. I'd probably disagree and enjoy most of the 1st season, since I remember enjoying the rest of it. I never really understood the whole 'oh god the fanbase' thing, because I never encountered them en masse. Like the whole szechuan thing was stupid, but I also didn't care because like...I never saw anything even related to it in real life.

also yeah, calling Recess an 'adult show' is very odd

Adult show doesn't mean to has to include mature themes, vulgar language, or extreme violence. Recess is an an adult show in the sense that a lot of the dialogue is written with tongue-in-cheek humor.

Kids shows can have that plus good writing and mature themes but they're still shows made for kids

I remember watching it as a kid, IIRC in the UK it aired on Cartoon Network, but maybe that's just the UK. Managed to find it on Google, won't post the link in case it's modded, but if you search for Home Movies episodes, it should bring up a page from archive.org

Yeah, I think there's a difference between shows like Regular Show or Adventure Time, which lean into the fact that they have an older viewership (intentionally or not as the case may be) despite airing on Cartoon Network, etc. and shows like Recess or Phineas and Ferb, which include jokes that only the kids' parents/older siblings will get in order to make the show entertaining for the whole family rather than a slog to watch if the kid has control over the remote.

IIRC the creator Regular Show & Close Enough said something along the lines that they wanted to make Regular Show as a show for adults (hence the constant 80s/90s references) but there wasn't really the market for it at the time, whereas after Regular Show ended there was, hence Close Enough. Tried to find a source for this but couldn't.

Similarly, Adventure Time wasnt originally designed as an adult cartoon, but as the series progressed, the creators leaned into its aesthetic and narrative maturity after noticing how many adult fans theyd attracted. Rather annoyingly, the only source I could find is behind a paywall: https://www.wired.com/2012/03/adventure-times-pen-ward

that doesn't make The Lego Movie an adult movie. it's a kid's movie with some jokes for adults. like Recess being a kid's show with some jokes for adults. You'd have to go to something like The Oblongs if you want to reference a more adult-themed cartoon.

I don't like the new episode of Beth and Space Beth. too pessimistic. Morel Orel was dark, but it made you empathize with the characters. Rick and Morty is just negative for the sake of being negative. Rick and Morty preaches that being genuine and happy means being dumb and weak.

I am now realizing just how far behind on Rick and Morty I am.

I remember liking season 1&2 (I think) but thinking season 3 was very inconsistent.

Haven't watched anything after that. Jesus Christ, there's been EIGHT seasons now?

They told you right in the pilot "Rick and Morty a hundred years forever Morty!" They're just getting started.

I'm glad they brought back B-plots for this episode, because both the A&B plots were great, and the plot with the Beths had a genuinely sweet resolution.

In my opinion, it was the best episode this season since the season premiere episode.

When I think the kid Beths episode was bad.
YOU COULDN'T AFFORD IT!
That was top 3 this season, IMO: the Easter episode and the Beths episode being its contenders(IMO).

Just a really sweet episode, and definitely not an episode they could have done much earlier in the show's life: even Jerry is a fully-fleshed out character who can carry an episode these days! And it was basically an episode about how our Jerry's family actually appreciates him .

Also Rick being super mad at Jerry for making small talk with him, screaming up the stairs that he was still made at Jerry for talking to him, only for them to be watching Naked&Afraid together naked in the stinger was great.

Also apparently at least one of next week's plots concerns Morty Jr. Calling back to one of the worst episodes in the series is...a choice.
