I think they are. I also think original games are an even greater test of intelligence since you can't use skills you previously learned to beat them.

They can be used to gauge certain critical thinking skills.

I've maintained for a long time now that Myst II: Riven would make a great intelligence test for kids. The level of abstract thinking you need to pull everything together and actually make progress in that game...if your kid can beat that game without a guide, congrats - you have a genius on your hands.
