Should you choose the corresponding starter Pokemon for each game.

As in, if you're playing Red than you pick Charmander, Blue you pick Squirtle, Gold you pick Cyndaquil, Silver you pick Chikokrita, Crystal you pick Totadile, etc.
Mars > Hersey
No. You should just always choose the water starter. Water Pokemon are the best.
what is the "corresponding starter" for any game other than RBGY?

Other than 1st gen and its remake, the box arts were all about the legendary Pokemon. So no, there is no corresponding starter to concern yourself with.
Hmm...
I just pick the one with the best design.
(Insert situational remark here)
I usually pick the fire starter just because there's usually a lack of good fire Pokemon in the early to mid game. If there's good mons though I just pick what I think looks coolest.
Gen I: not Charmander
Gen II: Not Chikorita
Gen III: Not the grass thing. I forget its name because it's completely forgettable.
Then you hit Gen IV and they just tend to all be at least alright going forward.
This is LinksLiege's signature. It is fantastic.

For example, canon wise Ruby/Brendan (male trainer) started with Mudkip in Gen 3

I wouldn't think so with it being Japan only.

I actually noticed a pattern that I did by complete accident:

Gen 1: Charmander
Gen 2: Totodile
Gen 3: Torchic
Gen 4: Piplup
Gen 5: Snivy
Gen 6: Water
Gen 7: Torracat

I typically go Fire>Water>Fire>Water

Snivy had to go and ruin it all.

IDK. It's entirely possible I'm wrong but last I checked it was japan only except gen 1.

Huh, I got it right. It stopped at 5th gen. I wasn't too sure whether it was earlier or not.
