As a game series IYO?

Arguably the two biggest most recongizable gaming mascots of all time.

Millions of people who have never touched a controller know who they are.

But which tiny titan has the greatest history of games in your opinion?

The Stout Italian Plumber?

Or the Blue Hedgehog who collects giant gold rings?

Mario without a doubt.
Back in the 16 bit Era it could be argued either way, but now it's Mario no question

If Sonic had kept up its overall quality levels from 1 to SA2 then probably that, but as it stands Mario is way ahead.

No, I just think people say the older games were good when they really weren't.

Realistically, the closest game to being good was SA2 and even that sucked.

This one's easy

On the one hand, we have a game franchise where the fanbase infighting is all about which game is the best in the series, with there being several contenders based on whether you prefer 2D vs 3D platforming and/or platforming vs RPG mechanics.

On the other hand, we have a game franchise where the fanbase infighting is about which game is the WORST in the series, with their being several contenders based on which one scarred you the most personally.

When the number of good games in your franchise is outweighed by the number of terrible/buggy nightmares, its probably time to throw in the towel. I'm gonna have to give this one to Mario, seeing how its been able to stay quality and fresh for over three decades now.

The only way this is even a contest is if you limit it to 2D games from the 90s.

Otherwise, at least I can say that Mania is way better than NSMB.

Mario was better than Sonic even in Sonic's prime. When you're talking about platforming, 2D or 3D, Mario is the gold standard.

As much as Mario fans complain about new super Mario brothers and 3d land/world Mario platformers never got as bad as Sonic.

This, at its worst, mario is unoriginal and bland, but still has great gameplay, whie sonic's worst in 3d is borderline unplayable, while sonic's worst in 2d is plain bad

Sonic only rivaled Mario in the 1990s. Now, he has fallen way off. Still very recognizable, but I'm sure there are mascots more recognizable than him. Like Pikachu.
