I think all electronic devices will be broken. Even an old NES will no longer work. The world will be knocked back to the 1800s. There will be no modern technology

Sounds like it would fry the power grid too. According to that article this happened in the 1800s and telegraph operators were electrocuted. Thats fucking crazy.

Yep. And if we had the society of today, back then, it might have ended our civilization. We only survived because we weren't advanced enough yet to be fully affected

Yeah, another Carrington event and it's GG civilization.

Let's make biscuits!
Just to be clear, this event is inevitable. It's not about it could happen. It's about when. It may not happen in our lifetime. Or it might. But someday it's going to happen. And this would be the first time it would actually harm us. It's happened countless times in the past, pre electronic civilization

it also sounds like it could be prevented with infrastructure changes. The more likely outcome is a brown out that makes us more aware of the threat, and then we gradually invest in infrastructure changes because of it. I think a complete and total obliteration of our network is the least likely outcome. Theres already redundancy built into a lot of our grids too.

The current solar cycle is suppose to ramp up and peak next year, with the peak predicted to be stronger than previously anticipated...

Even with the updated predictions of more sunspots, the strength of the cycle is still expected to be generally weaker than average.

Hopefully there's no problems

The internet isn't what's doomed civilization. Climate change and growing fascism is.

Technology has increased life expectancy, provided access to knowledge, improved science, etc., etc.
In part you're right & in part you're wrong. The Internet has allowed people with dumb opinions & views to congregate together & feel like they're a larger force than they are. When you have idiots who think they have superpowers, can control water, have hateful views towards women & ethnic groups, & they're able to metastasize & grow larger because the Internet allows them to find one another...That wouldn't happen if there wasn't a system allowing them to find one another. Most people only say the deranged shit that they do online because very clear cut mens rea has to be shown for the law to catch up with them. Otherwise, they sit in their hug boxes with their 10 other people radicalizing themselves.

That's why deplatforming works

Why the fuck should we not rely on technology? Should we also spend months without cars so everyone starts relying on bicycles and walking and horseback?

If society should not rely on advancements, then it should not advance in the first place.

ok so how does the internet going away make cults stop if cults existed before the internet?

I mean I understand the logic of 'the internet makes this one specific thing worse' but using that logic to justify that the internet has set society itself down the path of doom or whatever is just nonsense.

Never said that, you should take that up with another poster that did say the Internet was an overall downward trend for humanity. Imo it's both the greatest benefit to humanity, & also one of the greatest negatives. I wouldn't ever say get rid of the Internet, just not that it's only an objective good when there's a lot of things the Internet does make more possible that are awful because it exists & enables it, & wouldn't be as bad hypothetically if it didn't exist.

We have satellites accurately measuring and watching solar flares. If something like a Carrington Event is heading right at us, we will have 3-4 days to prepare for it. Power plants will be shut down, networks will be out offline, etc..

There will be chaos and looting like any natural disaster, maybe worse than we've ever seen, but slowly everything will come back online and life will return to normal.

Yes I think a month of walking everywhere would be generally good for society.

I meant relying on tech to THINK. Just getting spoonfed info from social media instead of critically thinking about things.

Probably not, though Many people alive right now (from my generation and older) use to not rely on tech as much. The only reason we do now is because its easier. So, for a while, we might not rely of tech. But as soon as its been back for enough time, people will go right to relying on it again And will hope someone builds better defenses so it doesnt happen again

That said, it also causes all kinds of other problems where certain things rely on tech to make them better of safer So, even though people can do it without tech, its better to use it

I think the internet has definitely caused unforeseen long term effects on culture and society like widening echo chambers and one can make an argument its partly to blame for the radicalization in America now and the breakdown of the political system. Because the gap between left and right seems ever further. Maybe its always been like this but in my lifetime it feels worse than ever. Ever since trump, but I think the internet is partly what has led us there. Everybody has their world and community catered to their already existing beliefs meaning we can no longer even agree on reality

Doesn't sound like you've though critically about this at all, maybe you should take your own advice?
We're always at the knife's edge of a CME or Carrington event. We missed one by nine days in 2012. It's not likely to happen, but it will, and it will fucking suck when it does.
