Asks for it back. Like say you find a watch on the ground, thats your watch. You have no obligation to try and find the owner.

however, if somebody later is like holy shit thats my watch! I lost it the other day! Then you have to give it back.

what are your guys personal rules when it comes to finders keepers?
That is my watch.

Cash is different. If its not in a wallet and it leaves your hand, its not the worlds and whoever finds it now owns it

Im more talking about things
Similar to you. As a server pens can be a rather highly valued commodity. If I see a pen lying on the ground I'm quick to pick it up and wanna claim it. However, if a server is close by I ask if they lost a pen.

This literally happened last night and it was her pen.

What?
MICHALECOLE posted...
What?

if you find a wallet with identifiable information in it, and you take from it, that is theft.
"Trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth."
If it is in a location that has a lost and found (hotel, amusement park, on public transit ect.) I will turn it in.

If there is identifying information, I will make a good faith effort to identify the owner and return it. ID card, "If found please call #", or "Name <3 Name date" I can almost certainly identify the owner and reach out. A fountain pen with initials or silver charm bracelet inscribed "Amy" probably not.

If it's particularly unique but I can't identify the owner, I'll check local Craigslist.

Beyond that, I'll keep it if it's something I want, or just leave it where I found it.

Yeah, I'd give it back. That's only right.

I would absolutely snatch anything I wanted up if I saw it on the ground and would not look for the owner. If the owner somehow found me, or say.. posted a sign or something or walked around saying did anybody find a watch?! Id give it back

I've had 2 situations where I found a decent sum of money, the person who dropped it did not notice & both times I did the right thing I let them know. Once was in a pharmacy, an older woman was fumbling with her wallet, and there was a 50 dollar bill on the ground right next to her. She was very grateful that I informed her she dropped it. Another time I was walking on a sidewalk to a pizzeria, dude passed me and dropped his wallet, had a nice sum of cash in it. Dude was moving fast as hell so I had to jog and catch up with him to hand it over. I guess those situations were a bit different as it was something I noticed rather than the people actively looking for something I found, but in both situations it felt good doing the right thing.
If I actively see somebody dropping money, or their wallet, or anything really, I would absolutely pick it up and give it to them. 100% of the time. However, if I find 100$ on the ground and didnt see who dropped it, that shit is now mine

If someone elses name is on the watch, give it back to them.

Actually there are like 12 golf balls somewhere in New Jersey that have either been sprayed into the woods or water around god knows how many golf courses out there with my name on it.

Not going to tell you my name of course, but if you see them, can you make sure I get them back? Those personalized Pro V1s are expensive.

the name on it is irrelevant. If I find a watch and its mine now and somebody says my watch! Im not going to question it, Im gonna assume it really is their watch, because how else would they know I found it?

because I literally said I WOULD give it back. Or do you just get upset at the words finders and keepers being close to each other?

Of course you will give it back when they asked. Finders keepers are mostly just keep quiet that they found something.
How will they ask you if they don't know you found it?

Unless if you'll post fliers that you found something, then i rescind my statement.

So you see something under a bench. A Pokmon card, a watch, a coin, whatever. A thing you think is cool. You think its immoral to pick it up?

Pick it up and keep it , yes.
The owner might still be looking for it. You pick it up and you will also waste their time and energy in search for their lost item.

I guess the difference between us it sounds like is if I lost something and came back and it was gone, I wouldnt blame the people who took it, Id be mad at myself for losing it in the first place. I wouldnt blame the picker upper for picking up

The money will be at least, so you might as well keep that for yourself before the mailman does.
Every day I wake up and promise I will be nice to everyone, then I deal with people at work and remember why that will never happen.
I believe in treat others how you want to be treated yourself. If you dont want your lost items returned to you, then dont return other peoples lost items. Youre still an asshole (and probably legally a thief as well) for it if you steal lost property though
Only thing I'll really keep is petty cash found in a public area (sidewalk, parking lot, etc)

Phones, wallets, electronics, and jewelry get returned, placed in lost and found, or left alone.
