Monster Hunter World vs Rise

I mean to be fair to World, which most old fans seemed to forget, was that it was using a wholly brand new engine and modelling system. That and trying to make the areas a living, breathing world took a lot of time. 36 large monsters at launch is nothing to scoff at, and I personally thought it was a fantastic start. Title updates / the DLC really just rounded it all out.

Lord I can't believe Tri only had 18 monsters. How did I play that?!
Yeah that's another thing that's always forgotten. The other games had the benefit of being on the same rig for years before Tri, then after Tri. So they could release with a ton of monsters. World didn't have that. The fact that it released with the amount of monsters it did was a miracle.

Rise got the benefit of coming after World, so they could add its new monsters on top of the already finished 5th gen Rathalos, Rathian, Pukei, Kulu, Anjanath, Tobi, Barroth, Jyuratodus, Diablos, Zinogre, Bazel, Rajang, Tigrex, Narga, Barioth, Teo, and Kushala, from World. That's 17 monsters ported over to start with right there. Then some of the other monsters they added were possible because the skeletons were already recreated for World. Magnamalo and Valstrax (Gore skeleton recreated for Nerg), Tetranadon (Jagras), Chameleos (skeleton recreated for Namielle), Great Baggi, Wroggi, and Izuchi (brutes/raptors)
