Meanwhile Helldivers 2 exceeded expectations beyond their wildest imagination.

The dev forecasted 50K CCU, prepared for 250K just in case, had to increase it to 700K two weeks after launch, and is expecting to hit that too.

Proof that corporate suits that only follow trends while not accounting for development time for AAA games are worthless.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

2023 was the year of colossal live service failures and shocking indie successes. If 2024 continues the trend, maybe "AAA" companies will finally get their shit together. Either way, there'll be something fun to play.

Some people were very upset at a certain death being done by a certain character, but no, the game is just generic nonsense that looks terrible.

Apparently it is pretty fun to play but completely marred by generic objectives (defend point for X minutes against waves of enemies or shoot big purple weak spot type of shlock) and looter shooter nonsense (everyone feels the same minus one specialty move). It just...always seemed bad, no matter how hard they tried to make it seem good. Such a shame this will be the end of Rocksteady. That, or we will get a new Batman Arkham game in another 10 years (which is what everyone wanted anyway)

I don't get why these companies can't go back to the time where you have both a robust, focused single player mode and a separate multi-player mode for the people who do want to sink 1000 hours into it.

If I had to guess it was the bad pretense of joke characters taking out the justice league.

I imagine before the game even came out if left a bad taste I'm people's mouths.

Admittedly I never played the game or cared for the game due to the trailer so take what I said with a grain of salt. The concept alone turned me away.

Like the idea of this game is not inherently bad, but the fact that each character doesn't have their own unique moveset is just fucking laughable.

Yeah, making them all unique would have at least given it a smidge of identity. But the structure of the game needed a serious overhaul, too. It's like they reverted back to 2002 mission design and went "yeah sure good enough".

Nah there were a few people asking for that shit sandwich. Every time I see people rationalizing their shitty purchases with video games, they say they're "having a blast with it." It's basically the go to red flag response when people bought a bad game but they're trying to squeeze any mileage they can out of it.

Not only did they know about the bad reception, they doubled down on it and said they weren't removing the GaaS part of it when they announced that huge delay. Or one of the huge delays they did. People were exciting for the game until the GaaS stuff was revealed. Then there was immediate backlash.

Yeah I think there was a huge difference between initial reveal and gameplay reveal. Initially everyone seemed to be pretty hyped at the concept and looked forward to it. Then gameplay shows its a third person shooter with every character using guns and the hype cratered and it became a laughing stock.

So yeah it's no surprise this game would fail to meet expectation, the moment you showed a live service in the same year as other live service games died out like Marvel Avengers and B4B. The only people who didn't see this coming are the literal business execs who have no idea about the gaming industry other than terms like GaaS, gacha, loot boxes, and battle passes. This means they only know which parts of the gaming market makes them money through predatory means and that's all they care about.

But anyways yeah I played the game, I didn't buy it my friend had an extra code for it, and the characters do actually have unique movesets and play differently because of the guns some characters are allow to use and the traversal options. But yes at the end of the day they all just shoot guns and that's how you literally kill the Justice League with. The game runs solid and it's pretty fun, but it's heavily marred by its GaaS model that ultimately will make sure this game will never be good.

Yeah the missions are primarily escort missions and "kill x amount of enemies". Like through the nine years of game development for this game, I don't know how the hell they couldn't come up with better mission objectives. You would think they would look at Destiny to give them ideas lol.

Yeah that's what really did it for me. I am not OPPOSED to live service games (Destiny 1 and 2 and Division 1 and 2 were the ones I played the most) but they need to at least be interesting. Give me a cool map to move through that leads to a wave defense or kill x amount and that's better than just what they put on offer.

I also forgot that Gotham Knights exists and is more or less a looter fighter with the Batman family, and that one crashed and burned too. How did WB just completely blind themselves to this?

If anything, Hogwarts Legacy shows that you can make a single player game sell like crazy if you deliver on what people are actually looking for in a video game as oppose to tying a game to predatory practices...but I don't think that will be the message that will come across towards the WB execs and their shareholders.

But yeah I play a lot of looter shooters and the most important thing about looter shooters is to have enough enemy diversity, mission objectives, and styles of play for self expression to where it doesn't feel monotonous to grind. Suicide Squad is early in its "life cycle" but I don't see it living very long lol.

Hell I was disappointed in HL cause I was hoping it would be a little bit more like Bully with classes scheduled to take and the like. In the end I found it to be wholly underwhelming and generic aside from the setting (the castle and Hogsmeade were awesome!). But I assume most people that are hooked on HP just loved casting spells and exploring the world.

IMO it would have been great if they focused on just the school and the singular town of Hogsmeade and focused more on being in the school. Maybe the dungeons and caves you go into are just fast traveled to, would have given the game more focus and less open world generic bloat.

But I get what you mean, from the first reveal the feedback was NOT good and they should have taken note instead of doubling down. Just silly as hell.

When the leaks about the story were coming in I gave them a year

Now I think I give them maybe six months. It's all so frustrating. Good studios get stuck on the live service train and then find themselves at best crippled.

Warner Bros. has no idea what people want.

Meanwhile, the devs that made Palworld and Helldivers 2 know exactly what people want. Warner Bros will decide that this translates to "more guns".

Well they ARE popular, but it's a one in a million shot. Like Helldivers 2 is technically live service, and it is the internet darling at the moment. You just need to like, make a game people want to play and not use it as an avenue to just nickel and dime your audience. Something most of these companies straight up don't understand.

It's like they appeal to the lowest common denominator, where you just need to chase a billion pieces of minimally better gear to make an arbitrary number go up so you can...do the same things to get more gear to make a number marginally go up. Then do an end game that's the same thing. Helldivers 2 is just straight fun, and THAT is enough to go back to it. Not chasing randomized drops or grinding out an insane battle pass. Just a slow climb of power on an extremely fun ride.
