Welcome to the NHK kind of? Not fucked up exactly but I saw way too much of myself in that show.

Redo of Healer feels like a cheap answer seeing as it exists solely for that purpose.

Fuck there was one that really stuck with me years ago, but I can't remember now. Only Claymore or Akame Ga Kill kinda come to mind, but I know there's worse. The rape scene in berserk was pretty bad along with that whole section, but idk

elfen lied doesnt really count for me, its so insanely edgy and over the top with it it makes it start to curve back around and start to feel silly. a lot of gorey anime is like that

serial experiments lain was probably the anime which made me feel the most uncomfortable

This is what I was going to say...I've only seen a few anime series but this one always stood out.

In my defense I've only really ever watched Kenshin as a kid. Some guy in the barracks had Beserk that I borrowed.

I'm gonna have to say Brynhildr in the Darkness. I remember thinking while watching it that it felt like it was written by someone who really hates women. Every single female in the cast was extremely dislikable except when they were thirsting over the MC. There was also the tragedy porn of their gruesome and torturous deaths. It just made for a really uncomfortable watch. Even though there's stuff out there that's more messed up, I can't ignore the sheer disdain for women that this series expressed.

Oh, another good candidate is Made in Abyss. On top of all the gruesome and horrifying stuff that happens, it's also really sketchy how much time it spends on little girls peeing.

I haven't watched many anime but it's Elfen Lied for me as well. I feel like it adds insult to injury because it's pretty mid as well. Is it generally held in low regard? I also watched the dub which was horrific. Also, that poor puppy.

I'm a big fan of all three shows, but I'll disagree here

the big draw of Higurashi is how good the show is at getting you attached to the characters, then killing them off brutally

There was an anime film so fucked up Japan banned it. Custom confiscated and destroyed the tapes. It was also written, drawn, and animated by one man (its creator) because no studio would want anything to do with it. Here's a description from MAL:

As of the 2010s, the film was screened frequently throughout Asia and Europeespecially the latter but never in the United States , due to import laws regarding certain types of pornography.

It is in some regards considered lost media and is also considered one of the most controversial anime due to being banned almost everywhere, including in Japan .

If we have to count stuff like that, then we'd have to count every really messed up work by one or two people who aren't a studio.

I mean, it requires a lot more effort than the example I am about to provide, but its like there being a topic about "the most messed up movie you ever watched" and saying that it was some torture-snuff porn film.

On the topic (the "so bad its banned" topic that is, not the example I gave... mostly), I recall hearing that a fully uncensored version of Kite doesn't exist anywhere, only varying degrees of censored versions.
