The PlayStation 5 will be celebrating its fourth birthday this autumn, but it really doesnt feel like the mid-point of the generation given the stock problems that marred the first two years and the recent paucity of first party releases.

Thats just one reason why rumours about the PS5 Pro being released this year have enjoyed such a muted response, with few gamers feeling a mid-generation upgrade is necessary. And it seems most developers agree with them.

Developers didnt seem to feel they needed it, he said. They werent really making the most of the PS5 in the first place, he added.

Thats pretty much exactly what most gamers have said, but while Sony has not made any official announcements the new console model has been rumoured for over a year now. Detailed technical specifications also recently leaked, which suggested it would be a smaller upgrade than from the PlayStation 4 to PS4 Pro.

All I want is more tb space on the sku models. If I'm too lazy to build a gaming pc I'm definitely too lazy to buy a 3rd party ssd and open up my ps5 and put it in the slot and then screw the whole thing back up

Installing an extra drive in a PS5, if it's anything like it was on PS3 and PS4, is infinitely simpler than building a gaming PC. Installing the drive is like, a 5 minute job at most.
Do, or do not. There is no Trumble.
Only reason I care about the Pro is that it means the base model might see a price drop
I'm still on ps4. Might get this if it doesn't look as bad as the ps5.

If the leaks are accurate, it's 90% of the way to being a PS6. I'm not sure why they can't leverage that.

Leverage what, to do/get what?
The point is to increase Playstation's profit margins.

The only point is to put the word "Pro" on the box to incite yet another Jingle All the Way release day.

lolno. The PS5 isn't even 90% of the way to being a PS4.

If I was a developer, the only thing I would worry about would the PS5 Pro being so powerful that the ps6 ends up being an Xbox Series S compared to a One X.

The only thing they really need to do is put in a chip that identifies it as a PS6 so games can refuse to play if it's anything else.
Which highlights the absurdity of the pro. Cutting edge gpu but still only Zen 2 cores. The expected jump to Zen 4 or better for the PS6 would be that check.

Games coming out now still feel like they're a half step above last gen to me.

I think the logic is that GPU stuff is easier to scale than CPU stuff.

What even to look forward to after Spider-man 2?
This just really seems targeted at the people who want to play everything 4k 60fps....who also have the money to spend. Thing is that youd think those people already have a PC.

And I'm here still on the PS4. What the heck was the PS5 good for?

to play those PS4 games better along with also being able to play PS5 games...

and all this dev statement tells me is that if you have a PS5 then you can choose to not get a Pro if they release one since they are still drawing the power out of the normal PS5.

I just wish the PS5 could use higher external HDs than 8TB or be able to use additional external HD.

I dont have a PS5, so Ill be buying one. Going Pro to Pro seems to be the most sensible thing.

It doesnt seem like there are really enough games worth getting the system for at all until the Pro model is out, especially if you game on PC.

Im only getting a PS5 at all because Vanillaware hates PC and I hate the Switch, so I got the PS5 collectors edition of Unicorn Overlord.

Its not for people who have a PS5 already. Its for those of us who dont because we were waiting for a Pro model.

But yeah. If I could play every exclusive on PC, I wouldnt get one. Unicorn Overlord is my excuse.

Why wouldnt I? Im a PC gamer and its basically the antithesis of the experience I prefer.

Im used to an open platform with 1440p 120+ FPS, and the Switch is a closed platform with 720p 20 FPS much of the time (Breath of the Wild certainly chugged at under 20 all the fucking time). I never used it in handheld mode as I hate gaming on a handheld anyway, but even if I didnt, the JoyCons are absolutely godawful as controllers. The Switch has objectively the worst online / account infrastructure, and it has no achievements or trophies. So all the Switch ever was to me was the weakest console, with the least features, the worst version of every third party game, and a gimmick I couldnt care less about.

The only thing to like about the Switch is Nintendos first party games, and those have nothing to do with the Switch besides them being arbitrarily held hostage to it. So the only reason my Switch is ever woken up is to dump the Nintendo first party games I legally purchase so I can emulate them on my PC (or my Steam Deck, which is the Switch but better and with a platform I love instead of one I hate) at 1440p / 60 FPS instead of 720p / 20 FPS.

Fuck better specs, how about using the features for once? Capcom and a few others use gyro and the triggers, some others use 3D audio, but its still pathetic. How is Hunt Showdown, a last gen multiplat, still the only game to truly make use of 3D audio? Where are the games with instant asset streaming? Why is Astro the only game that truly uses the controller? Leave the specs shit to Xbox that doesnt even have gyro, the rest of the industry does have all these features so develop for them already.
I find the product to be rather pointless given the base models of the PS5 and XSX haven't seen their full potential reached. Like, we're four years into their life cycles and we're only NOW seeing more of their technology being leveraged. Now Sony wants to introduce even more variables to divide the developer's focus? I've got a feeling the developers won't do enough to justify having the Pro model.

Last console cycle it made sense. Not only were both Microsoft and Sony producing Pro models, but also 4K resolution was spreading like wild fire. What is the single Pro model selling to justify its existence to consumers? True, those who haven't bought a base PS5 have a legitimate reason to get the Pro model over the base. But I'd argue with the existence of the Pro model, it would be more cost efficient to get the base model as that is guaranteed to experience a price drop. I see the pro model as an enthusiast's product and likely will be priced as much.

But yeah, I really don't see a strong purpose for this.

I'll get the pro if it's worth it if not I'll go for a slim and it will already be at a lower price by then

Even if they feel that way, the extra power will allow their present games to run at 4K60FPS Even if they don't use the full power directly

So then why not emulate Switch Unicorn on PC? PS5 exclusives will eventually go to PC anyway and even if they don't they're not that special. Although if they don't, wouldn't that fall under your "arbitrarily held hostage?" Personally I think a built in system for achievements/trophies are gratuitous and just encourage trophy whoring. Any well designed proper challenges should be built into the game itself, which a lot of Nintendo games are doing. A lot of prominent indie devs hate them too. As I believe you're aware yourself, PS's arbitrary and inconsistent restrictions out of perceived moral guardian reasons are a lot more anti-consumer while Nintendo has outright confirmed they won't restrict 3rd parties outside of the local age ratings. You claim the only thing to like about the Switch is Nintendo's 1st party games which have nothing to do with the Switch because they're just being held hostage but the reason you're getting a PS5 is because of a (third party) PS5 game not on PC.
For two reasons:
  1. I hate basically everything Nintendo does as a business besides making their first party games (like their hypocrisy about emulation), so I dont want to give them one red cent I dont have to for an exclusive I want to play.
  2. PS5 having Trophies and Switch not would be reason enough to not play the Switch version by itself. Im going to do the challenges anyway, so I may as well get credit for them.

Mainly I want one because I have a PS4 Pro now to play any older exclusives that havent and likely wont be ported (namely Bloodborne), and a PS5 Pro would let me have a better version of that and get rid of it. Plus, I doubt the Demons Souls remaster will be ported, and I want to play that eventually in case it doesnt.
There is actually nothing to like about the PS5 other than its exclusives (which will eventually go to PC anyway). Unlike the Switch's gimmicks that PC doesn't have, things like power, FPS, and trophy system are all things on PC (and Xbox).
Not all of them have, and not all of them likely will. And unlike the Switch, I cant just easily emulate PS5 games because the PS5 didnt have basically a weak mobile phone CPU when it came out like the Switch was.

I dont have much reason to care about Sony censoring things, as I wont buy a third party from them if they censor it. If theyre going to censor their own exclusives, no choice, and Nintendo likewise has a history of doing that, like covering up Tharjas ass in Fire Emblem Awawkening.

I already said I dont care about the Switchs gimmicks. It was pitifully weak when it came out, and theres no technical reason its exclusives couldnt be played elsewhere, so besides those, whats a single thing to like about it?

Zen 2 isn't really that bad for a current Gen console in CPU power. It's even still serviceable today for console gaming

And for future proofing it's good too because the stronger the CPU the harder it is to emulate and enable backwards compatibility

Likewise I hate everything Sony does as a business (like ditching their systems like Vita which they continued to push new firmwares for just to screw up homebrew even after they've stopped supporting the system and their hypocrisy towards buying timed exclusives while complaining about Xbox doing so and refusing crossplay with the other platforms because they were up their own ass) when their modern first party games are all of the same cinematic mold and they threw away their old varied exclusives because they want to chase "global trends" like aforementioned cinematic focus and live service so I dont think they should be given one red cent that you don't have to.

Most trophies are just basic "beat level 1" stuff and things that go beyond that often go into tedious grindy BS that just wastes time. In any case, if you like a game so much you'd be willing to play them at launch I feel you could replay it when it comes out on PC and do a full complete of the game on a fresh file. I know I've done that for a few games I really like.

Bloodborne is the only exception and it's basically just a meme. Every other franchise has gotten a PC release and some are getting one within 2-3 years. Third parties generally get them even sooner. But I mean still, exclusives are arbitrary hostages according to you. Nintendo never legally has their games playable on PC. And the Switch 2 isn't likely to have an emulator that can emulate it any time soon.

I actually don't play any of those games but I think refusing third parties are much more anti-consumer than just changing your own inhouse (even then any physical changes hasn't happened since 2017). Although Sony's first parties are now all American so its first party censorship are only in stricter countries which you probably aren't affected by.

My point is that the Switch at least has gimmicks and its exclusive library is much larger than PS5's. Meanwhile the PS5 has nothing over the other graphics focused platforms other than its own exclusives which are much smaller and are also likely to become multi-platform as per their own words.
It has gimmicks I didnt ask for, dont like, and dont want to have to deal with just to play Nintendo games. Same as the Wii and Wii U and the DS and 3DS.

In an ideal world everything would come to PC and I wouldnt have to buy any of the shitty boxes, but thats not the world we live in. I bought a Switch to dump legally purchased Nintendo games so I could emulate them better than the Switch can natively play them, and Ill buy a Switch 2 for the same reason, but fuck Nintendo as a company. If theyd just release their games on PC after a time delay like Sony is doing, theyd literally print billions and I wouldnt have to worry about any of this.

I also buy and rip Blu-Rays for my media server, and I occasionally have to use the PS4 to play a Blu-Ray so I can read the special features menu and note down all the special features to help me find them from the rip, so I can organize everything correctly. Usually I can do that on PC, but every now and then something is stubborn and I have to use the PS4. I assume the PS5 supports 4K UHD Blu-Rays, which the PS4 doesnt. I recently ripped a 4K Akira Blu-Ray and it wouldnt read it, but fortunately it seemed like all the special features were on the 1080p disc anyway just looking at the files.
