I guess it was a different dog. I remember Stewie killing a dog and faking a suicide note to the family. Maybe Brian ran away one episode

It really wasn't. They literally started the initial episode with Stewie going forward in time to get the toy he wanted, thus setting up the later rescue situation.

I reckon they should've kept Vinnie around too tho. Even maybe as like, a recurring side character's dog (or even one of the other main characters, can't see him working with Quagmire but possibly with Cleveland or even at a stretch Joe).
