On his way out the door after giving remarks about the protests, Biden was asked if there was going to be a change in policy. His one-word reply was "no". So expect the IDF to continue using American bombs to kill innocent civilians in Gaza.

Aaand Netanyahu just destroyed one of the major pillars of Israel's democratic system in order to dodge the Attorney General's demand that he draft the Ultra-Orthodox/Haredim (doing so will result in the ultra-orthodox parties dissolving the coalition, you see, forcing a new election. Being prime minister-- and the war-- are the only two things keeping Netanyahu out of prison.)

Avichai Mandelblit made the accusation 2 days after the government defied the attorney general and allowed ministries and IDF to bypass her position on drafting of Haredi students and yeshiva funding

In the end, Netanyahu got his desired coalition "reform" in the middle of a fucking war. And with that, the only supposed democracy in the Middleast dies. Pitiful. (To add extra sting, I'd like to point out that the original ruling that demanded conscripting the Haredim was in 2017, where the AG found it discriminatory to exempt the Haredim from the draft)

Well that sucks. Was really hoping those draft dodgers would need to get in the thick of things. Outright defying the Attorney General hopefully helps get him removed from power.

And yet, conservatives in the west will continue to pretend that "Israel is the only democracy in the middle east"

It's so frustrating
Israels system of government is more democracy adjacent.

No Constitution, a deeply flawed coalition system, (potentially) no more Supreme Court and a government that seems to exist only to redistribute former Palestinian lands to Israelis.

Palestinian Released From Israeli Prison Describes Beatings, Sexual Abuse and Torture

The beatings became a daily affair. Occasionally the guards demanded of prisoners that they kiss an Israeli flag and declaim, "Am Yisrael Chai!" "The People of Israel live." They were also ordered to curse the prophet Mohammed. The usual call to prayer in the cells was prohibited. The prisoners were afraid to utter any word starting with the sound "h" lest the guards suspect they had said "Hamas."

On October 29, the supply of running water to the cells was halted, except between 2 P.M. and 3:30 P.M. And each cell was permitted only one bottle for storing water for an entire day. That was to be shared by 10 inmates, including for use in the toilet inside cell. The doors of the toilet were ripped off by the guards; the inmates covered themselves with a blanket when they relieved themselves. To avoid a stench in the cell, they tried to contain themselves until water was available. During the hour and a half when there was running water, the prisoners allocated five minutes in the toilet to each cellmate. With no cleaning supplies, they cleaned the toilet and the floor with the bit of shampoo they were given, using their bare hands. There was no electricity at all. Lunch consisted of a small cup of yogurt, two small, half-cooked sausages and seven slices of bread. In the evening they received a small bowl of rice. Sometimes the guards delivered the food by throwing it on the floor it.

On October 29, the inmates of Abu Halil's cell requested a squeegee to wash the floor. The response to that was to send the terrifying Keter unit into their cell. "Now you will be like dogs," the guards ordered. The prisoners' hands were cuffed behind their back. Even before they were shackled, they were ordered to move only with their upper body bent over. They were led to the kitchen, where they were stripped and forced to lie one on top of the other, a pile of 10 naked prisoners. Abu Halil was the last. There, they were beaten with clubs and spat on.

Rafah still has operational medical facilities.

IMO the reason why Israel cannot let go of a military ground operation is above.

They're hell bent on making Gaza unlivable. They've taken out all of their infrastructure and practically all of their educational facilities. Then they'll "encourage" the Gazans to emigrate and suddenly have a lot of beach front property for their population.

I find it awful Israel are pushing for a ceasefire while also stating no matter what happens they will invade Raffah. Like wtf. A ceasefire isnt a ceasefire if you are stating you are going to continue to attack.

Not much. The Hamas militants are showing themselves as capable of engaging directly with the IDF but all they can really do is cause momentary frustration. They cant protect the Palestinian people from being carpet bombed and massacred by Israel.

They don't want to protect he Palestinian people from being carpet bombed. They've openly admitted they want to make martyrs of the innocent civilians in Gaza.
Yeah Im not a fan of the sudden recognition of Hamas as the good guys in this story by some quarters. Whatever peoples views of Israel and their over zealous response against Gaza there should be no one against the removal of Hamas who have done bad things against the innocent people of Gaza themselves. Hell they havent had free elections in Gaza for almost two decades and the majority of people alive in Gaza have never actually participated in an election in Gaza.

Israel and their over zealous response against Gaza

A deliberate and systematic campaign of genocide is not "over zealous." That's so remarkably offensive in the face of such overwhelming evidence.

Why would you soft peddle Israel's atrocities like that?

You don't begin hunting down terrorists by shutting off electricity and water to something like two million people and then razing their hospitals and medial infrastructure to the ground. That's not how it works.

Saying Israel's reaction to the criminal terrorism is "over zealous" is like saying Mussolini was just "enthusiastic" about railroad scheduling. It radically undersells the crimes being committed under an alleged greater good.

Truth be told I get so paranoid of getting banned from CE I sometimes err on the side of caution these days. Ive been purgatoryd from these topics twice in the last six months of criticising Israel too vehemently. Genuinely didnt mean to downplay the plight of what the Palestinians are facing. Id reword that post if I could.

Yeah. This. And mods are increasingly unwilling to clarify things either. See also, the recent topic on ATM where I asked if "fuck off" is still allowed, which would have been a quick yes or no answer but mods have decided to leave us guessing instead. (I haven't seen anyone get modded for it so presumably it's still allowed.)

Based on his next post I'm guessing he self deleted it.

Still, it's a pretty shameful mark on the mod team that anyone would be even hesitant to state that Israel are waging a genocide on the grounds that they're worried they'll get warned / suspended for it.

MAGA dickheads showed up to counterprotest the Palestinian protesters in Mississippi, and managed to shout both anti-Palestinian and antisemitic garbage:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/04/university-of-mississippi-counter-protesters

The counter-protesters included individuals waving American flags and Trump flags. At one point, they sang the American national anthem, drowning out the pro-Palestinian groups chants. The Oxford Eagle reported that one person held a Come and take it flag while another flew a Dont tread on me banner. The pro-Palestinian students held signs reading Jesus was a Palestinian, Stop the genocide and Cut all ties with Israel.

There were no arrests, but the actions of the counter-protesters who shouted Fuck Joe Biden, Whos your daddy?, USA, Hit the showers, Your nose is huge and, in one instance, included a white man making monkey noises at a Black woman have been widely condemned on social media.
