The U.S. paused a shipment of bombs to Israel last week over concerns that Israel was approaching a decision on launching a full-scale assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah against the wishes of the U.S., a senior administration official said Tuesday.

The shipment was supposed to consist of 1,800 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) bombs and 1,700 500-pound (225-kilogram) bombs, according to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter, with the focus of U.S. concern being the larger explosives and how they could be used in a dense urban setting. More than 1 million civilians are sheltering in Rafah after evacuating other parts of Gaza amid Israels war on Hamas, which came after the militant groups deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed that the United States is pausing a shipment of high-payload munitions to Israel due to possible ground operations in Rafah without a plan for civilians in the southern Gaza city.

Were going to continue to do whats necessary to ensure that Israel has the means to defend itself, but that said, we are currently reviewing some near-term security assistance shipments in the context of unfolding events in Rafah, Austin said at a Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee hearing.

Ill post this in here as the other topic hasnt really got going.

Due to the power dynamics in place I tend to lean towards prioritising anything that leads towards less civilian deaths. Its good that Hamas accepted a ceasefire but after reading up on the specifics it seems like they just unilaterally accepted a ceasefire that Israel had said is non starter in its current form. I dont agree with many things the Israelis have done over the war and coming out and saying they are going to attack rafah no matter what happens is s***ty. I do also accept from Israels point of view any ceasefire should include Hamas being removed from power. I also think that works both ways and Netanyahu shouldnt be in charge as hes an obstacle to peace in the area but just like removing Hamas any replacement of leadership on both sides is likely to be business as usual.

Im also sceptical of the timing of Hamas of waiting until hours before Israel are about to pull the trigger on going into Rafah before saying they accept a ceasefire. From a political point of view theyve pulled a blinder in making Israel looking like theyve broken a ceasefire that never existed and Israel never agreed to while trying to garner more international support which seems to be working tbh based on all the Hamas accept ceasefire news articles out just before the Rafah attack begins. Like I said above peace will never be possible without both Hamas and Netanyahu out of power but Israel have publically stated they will be going into Rafah no matter what so . In a sane world Israel would hold back until more ceasefire talks have been concluded. Not rush to attack Rafah ASAP as soon as Hamas publically announce they have come to terms on a potential ceasefire deal. It seems Israel want to go into Rafah no matter what.

As per the whole situation while all these political games are being played out in the media its the innocents in Gaza who suffer.
The CIA Director was at those negotiations and no one thought there was a disagreement until Israels War Cabinet got involved.

Thanks. I wasnt aware of the CIA involvement.

I thought Israel had already rejected the deal on the table prior to Hamas accepting it but I could be getting confused with another time.

It's this part right here. There's enough vagueness in the wording that a "plan for civilians" to keep them safe could mean anything. For example, the US has claimed, for months on end, that Israel is taking all measures to avoid civilian casualties. All actual evidence indicates this is not true.

Only when Europe slowly starts to shift its position will it put pressure on the US to follow suit.

It took 30 years for the West to support the UN committee against apartheid in South Africa. Apartheid only ended when the US changed it's position and it was the last to do so.

We definitely don't have 30 years.

My summary of the interview with Scot Anderson, deputy UNRWA Director [ty CommonStar]

UNRWA is out of fuel and cannot do anything except hear the shooting and look out the window.

There were strikes outside the evacuation zone. There is chaos. Some people move to places others have moved from. People everywhere are moving carrying their stuff. The westmost place is on the beach, obviously, and lots of people are moving there.

And the safe place designated by IDF? IDF did not make any arrangements. There are already people there.

Netanyahu makes implicit criticisms of Biden after US warning on weapon supplies
From CNN's Lauren Izso and Tim Lister
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel is ready to stand alone if necessary as it continues its military campaign in Gaza, in what appeared to be an indirect response to the US' warnings over its actions in Rafah.
Netanyahu said in a message to the Israeli people on the eve of the countrys Independence Day: Today we are much stronger. We are determined and we are united to defeat our enemy and those who seek our souls.
If we have to stand alone, we will stand alone. I already said that if we have to -- we will fight tooth and nail," he said.
It seemed to come in response to an announcement by US President Joe Biden on Wednesday that the United States would halt deliveries of some weapons to Israel if it continues its campaign into the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
Striking a defiant note, Netanyahu said: In the War of Independence 76 years ago, we were few against many. We had no weapons, there was an arms embargo on Israel, but with the greatness of spirit, bravery and unity among us - we won.

Hello
There is a physician from Chicago working in Rafah and now the group that sent him there cannot evacuate him. Just read this in the local newspaper.

https://chicago.suntimes.com/israel-hamas-war/2024/05/08/doctor-rafah-gaza-crisis

An American doctor volunteering in Gaza says the humanitarian crisis is becoming increasingly dire as the Israeli army begins to invade the southern town of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians are trying to shelter.
Our patients are dying because of the lack of supplies, resources and shortage of staff, the doctor says in a video dispatch shared with the Sun-Times from Gaza.
The situation in Rafah has become so dangerous that global medical relief organization Syrian American Medical Society wants to evacuate the American doctor serving there but cant.

Were very concerned with their safety, said Dr. Mufaddal Hamadeh, Chicago-based president of the organization that includes the American doctor stranded there.

This photo is from the article. I am trying to wrap my mind around how skinny the child's arm is.

Does that mean they reject the charter and have withdrawn their membership from the UN?

I understand the purpose of symbolic gestures. Shredding the cease fire agreement that went through would have made appropriate (but still morally wrong) political theatre. Shredding the charter they're a signatory of? Isn't that like burning your passport and renouncing your citizenship?

The generational shift will be damning to Israel in the coming decades. The older generations still get all their propaganda from the legacy media, but younger generations are seeing the true face of Israel and once seen it can never be unseen. The current generation won't forget. They'll always see Israel now as a genocidal racist apartheid state that has complete contempt for international law.

Setting aside for a moment the humanitarian concerns that should be at the forefront of decision making, at some point doesn't Biden have to recognize that this is an unreliable ally at best? The US can be the lone voice at the Un opposing Palestinian statehood, and Israel will return the favor by angling to get Trump elected again.

I think this thread does a good job of explaining the generational gap: https://bsky.app/profile/notalawyer.bsky.social/post/3ks46zkp4nk2q

If you were of a certain age at 9/11, you basically hold it as a given principle that routine state violence and terrorism hold separate moral weights. And younger generations don't make that distinction.

I'm not trying to be dramatic but reader discretion is advised for the descriptions of the physical state of the camp and detainees. I firmly believe that Israel knows this, understands it, and because of it knows their timeline to kill as many Palestinians as possible/take as much land as possible, is limited the era when boomers still control American politics.

I firmly believe that if we make it through the coming storm of Trump and the GOP's shift towards Fascism as their core ideology (instead of just paying lip service to it) that support for Israel will be a poison pill for politicians. Even accounting for a percentage of Gen Z growing more conservative as they get older (which I don't think will happen, most Millenials have all gone harder left as we've gotten older) the youth overwhelmingly opposes Israel's policies.

If Israel wants to be an authoritarian ethnostate at constant strife with it's neighbors because it's built on a giant graveyard then it can do so without the help of the US anyone else.

Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) is prepping articles of impeachment against President Biden after he warned that the U.S. will stop supplying offensive weapons to Israel if its forces launch an invasion into Rafah.

Mills, a first-year lawmaker, unveiled his impeachment resolution Thursday, which charges Biden with abuse of power, and he said he plans to pursue action Friday.
