I imagine over in the UK, there are people who defend this sort of thing and say things like "well just work harder", "get a second job", and "stop spending money on avocado toast (or the Brit equivalent)" like we do in the US.

Brits in general have a slightly more socialist and slightly less work-capitalist mindset comparative to america (for example, working more than 40 hours a week isn't exactly celebrated here, people just look at you like there's something wrong with you), so instead all that angst is directed at the government for doing too little/not enough or on immigrants for taking all the jobs/not working and costing benefits

We certainly have wealthy old money conservatives in charge who believe that the fix for people being poor is to not be poor, though
