OK or better, character gacha doesn't even need good rates. I want one with a decent story but even I'd it's a lame story that pretends it's interesting for a couple chapters worth of gameplay that's fine, my attention span is short. Already tried Honkai Star Rail, another eden and a bunch of obvious ones, so I'm more interested in obscure ones but I'll take low hanging suggestions.
Crono Trigger
That's not a gacha game and I just realize now i typo'd the title. Crono Trigger is basically the best rpg ever though so I understand the desire to recommend it.1

Yeah I played that for a while and it didn't have much of a story at all. Honestly I'd even take adequate, that story was just all cameos

I remember really enjoying the story for Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. I haven't touched that game in years though, so I don't know if the quality has held up with newer story additions.

it's pronounced "gotcha!" because you think the game is free, but it ends up costing hundreds of dollars if you wanna win. then the devs say "heh...gotcha!"
?
SMT: Dx2 Liberation was the only gaccha I ever got into. Gameplay was more the bread n butter for me, but the story was... decent enough I guess?

On the one hand, yeah. Passable stories with plot and characters, free on my phone, turn based, most have anime aesthetics. It's just missing a character gacha.

It's not true but it basically is. That's why I bounce from game to game when the free stuff dries up.

Not that I know of. The Chinese server shut down in 2022, but the global version is still up and running. People are speculating that it's dying, but in the same way that people have been saying "gamefaqs is dying" for years now

They are a live service game that encourages you to play to get premium currency to do gambling style pulls to try to win good characters abd sometimes gear. Then lowers the odds enough they hope you decide to buy more of this currency.

When you start you tend to get a lot of free stuff and newbie quests for a couple weeks before you hit a wall where a lot of the extra bonuses dry up and the game gets harder. The best gacha games never hit this as hard but most hit it pretty hard to try and get people to spend.
Another Eden. You can beat the main story without out spending a cent and still get a lot Summons too.

If you're specifically interested in story, Fate/Grand Order is a strong recommendation. It's an absolutely awful game by every other metric, summon rates are terrible and the pity system is a slap in the face, summoning currency runs out fast and comes back slow, gameplay is ridiculously dull and repetitive and almost completely unskippable, and it just really doesn't have any respect for your time whatsoever. I've been playing for close to a year and I couldn't recommend it more highly~

That said, based on your post, you've almost certainly at least tried it, but I don't think there are any others I could recommend at the moment...except maybe Honkai Star Rail, which you specifically mentioned, so that's out!

Both of the ones I thoroughly enjoyed are both dead sadly. One had a great 10 year run. The other, about 3. I miss them dearly. (Dragon Quest Super Light / Graffiti Smash)
Granblue Fantasy is basically that. Old af for a gacha but it's probably the best in terms of what they offer to F2P players.

Why would anyone willingly walk into the spiraling hole of gacha games?

I already got bored of that one, it was ultimately slightly too uninteractive because of the autoattack iirc.

Because I'm really bored. I've already touched bottom once and spent too much so now I just need a new game every couple weeks.

And yes I am aware that makes it sound like drugs

It's not turn based but Guardian Tales has got legitimately one of the best stories in any video game I've ever played.

Though it's got both a character and equipment gacha. If all you care about is the story, you don't actually need to engage with the gacha. The story mode is easy enough that you can do it with just the free shit.
It says right here in Matthew 16:4 "Jesus doth not need a giant Mecha."

That would be playing with fire for me. The reason I haven't touched Brave Exvius in years was because I was spending tons of money on it. Not gonna risk falling back into that constantly lol.

But why not try some MMO's if you need new games to kill time with? Those can be a lot of fun and keep you occupied for a while. One MMO that had a good story and a nice anime aesthetic was 'Closers Online'

You probably tried it already but for story your really can't beat Fate Grand Order.

Play Granblue Fantasy, don't even have to download anything because there a browser version that works decent enough on mobile.

There technically isn't an English version of the game, but you can change the language to English so it literally doesn't matter

I feel like we have different definitions of okay. It doesn't need to be so good you wpuld want to read it as a book, I want a defined goal and a few amusing characters.
