Both are great series, but which do you prefer altogether?

Couldnt get into Castlevania. Metroid is pretty cool.
Hello there! I am a signature. I'm kinda surprised you're even reading me, to be honest. Most people wouldn't bother. You're better than that though. Thank you.
Castlevania for me.

I love me some Super, Fusion, Prime and Dread, but IV, Rondo, Symphony, Aria, Dawn and Order of Ecclesia are just better to me.

any good metroidvania that's in a modern setting, not medieval or futuristic?
We suffer from the delusion that the entire universe is held in order by the categories of human thought.
Castlevania

Even before SotN cemented it, I was absolutely obsessed with Simon's Quest when I got it and played it all the time.

NES: Castlevania
GB: Metroid
SNES: Metroid
GBA (and all handhelds going forward): Castlevania
N64/PS: Castlevania, no contest
Gamecube/PS2: Metroid
Everything going forward: Castlevania

Overall: Castlevania. Pound for pound it beats Metroid with two notable losses on the SNES gen and Gamecube gen.

Metroid is technically the more consistently good series (outside of Other M, which I still like), but I find that the best Castlevania games are better than the best Metroid games.

This is a tough one, but I suppose Metroid.
No lollygaggin'.
2D Castlevania and 3D Metroid

Overall Castlevania
Burnin, Blazin
Castlevania, but I wouldn't call either series a favorite. The game I like the most from either series was Aria of Sorrow.

Castlevania and it isn't even a contest
The
Metroid has consistent quality with only two or three bad games, but Castlevania has several genuine bad ones.

But I also prefer the Metroidvania ones over Metroid because I like Castlevania's RPG elements. But I also don't care much for the classic CV style.
...I think I'm done here...
Castlevania.

The name is wackyteen for a reason. Never doubt.
Overall Castlevania, though it would be incredibly hard to decide between Super Metroid and Symphony of The Night.

Never really played any games from either franchise.

I've been meaning to check out some Castlevania though because I played Bloodstained: RotN a while back and quite enjoyed it.

Bloodstained is basically a love letter to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
