I could have sworn this basically happened 6 or 7 years ago. Maybe not the name change but policy wise didnt they start accepting girls like 6 or 7 years ago and had curriculum for them as a whole and not individual boys or girls? It was just Scouts.

I swear shit hit the fan on this back then because I remember there being a bunch of arguing about it online.

That said -- I'm fine with it. Venturing Scouts already existed as a co-ed organization aimed at high schoolers.

Numbers are dwindling across the board (partially because of the whole pedophilia and subsequent cover up in the 70s and 80s, partially because of socio-economic and lifestyle factors), so in order to keep cub, girl, and boy scouting programs in the black with a decent population -- a merge was inevitable.

Scouting took forever to even do Venture. Now I guess they're just like "Whatever, join Scouts."

People who are mad about this probably weren't even involved in Boy Scouts when they were talking about Venture or they got super super butt mad that they left when they were. I only knew because my Scout master decided to combine Girl Scouts and Boy Scout troops together for a few years and I didn't care as Middle Schooler that I was camping with teenage girls.

It's essentially a lead in for cadets which has both genders enrolled. I too don't see a problem with it.

People need to get over themselves and realize teaching one set of skills to specific genders just enforces gender roles and is stupid.

It makes sense considering that they accept kids regardless of gender. If anything it just highlights Girl Scouts as being exclusionary; and IIRC they grumbled for a while about the Boy Scouts accepting girls because it undercut the Girl Scouts in their opinion.

Scouting as a general idea should be a way to teach practical things for any and all kids. It also provides a second group for social development beyond school.

I'm all for the idea of boy scouts because I think it teaches valuable skills to youngsters. But the whole pedophile thing back in the day kind of ruined it. In no way should a kid have been left one on one with those creeps. Ideally it would have been a requirement to have 2 adults required at any event.

Which the organization started requiring in the early 90s, because they were completely aware of the sexual misconduct and wanted to prevent it going forward. This practice was often referred to as "two deep leadership".

The comments are blaming the woke but this change is 100% free-market capitalism. Fact of the matter is Boy Scouts have grown less and less relevant throughout the years and membership has been in decline along with it. They weren't flourishing before getting hit with a gigantic, entirely deserved legal judgment. They needed to find a way to make more money. And fast.

What's the best way to increase membership and revenue? You double your potential member pool by letting all genders join.

I'd be curious as to how many of the people rage commenting were/are actively involved in Boy Scouts, because as someone who was super involved for years this change warrants a resounding "okay" out of me. High school me would have fucking loved it. Today, I do recognize that there is value in having spaces to foster healthy male bonding, so I can understand the disappointment in losing Boy Scouts as that sort of venue, especially for boys who don't gravitate for sports. But frankly Boy Scouts wasn't exactly good at in the first place (and the changes to make it good would be considered far more woke than letting girls in) and the alternative to letting everyone join is just shutting down entirely, so that safe male space would be going away regardless. At least this way they can still have an organization kids can join focused on conservation, outdoorsmanship and civic duty.
