Modern day AC?
It doesn't matter to me anymore as long as Ubisoft is involved but I actually liked the modern day story and hoped we would one day get a game where we play as Desmond. For obvious reasons that's never going to happen.Yeah I would have loved it if they had stuck with that original plan to have Desmond become a modern day assassin. I'm not a fan of what they've done with the modern day segments since then
But there's still a lot of possibilities.
Han Dynasty game would probably be my next choice.

There's tidbits of story there but honestly feels like they should just change this game to just send you straight into playing an assassin without the modern world having anything to do with it.This is what they did in Liberation. You don't even know who is in the Animus but it's implied to be a Templar that left the assassins somewhere along their lineage.
