even as a kid i thought that was really weird and i didn't quite understand it. as an adult, i still don't get how it adds to the plot in any way. the only thing i can think of is that it shows how strong Sarah was to be able to avoid reacting. it also shows how deplorable the conditions of the hospital are.
Yeah I think that's there to just show the disdain the employees have for the people under their care. It doesn't add anything other to demonstrate Sarah's self control.
