See who lives nearby?

I only have 1 in what i'd consider my neighborhood.

I decided to check. There are 8 in a 1 mile radius, including 1 guy in the apartment complex next to mine. There's even one female offender in my area, although she did her crime in Oregon.

So why do we have to meet at my place every time?

I've done it out of boredom and curiosity, mainly because it has no impact on me personally. I will say that sometimes, I've came across some that have shocked me, in the "OMG they are on the registry?!" sense lol.

The registry tells you what they did to get on it.

Yeah so the first people I found were in there for criminal sexual assault and child pornography, don't think this is as common as you'd prefer to believe.
no but I live less than a half mile from multiple schools so I don't think they'd be allowed to live near me

Crazy because I live within 1 mile of 2 schools, an elementary and a middle school and there's like 5-6 around me. You'd think they would actually take that part seriously and not let them live near schools, the ones near me aren't the 'got caught pissing outside' types either....

maybe it's state law related, oregon has that and they cant be around a certain hundred of feet within a school or children etc.

think there's only 8 offenders listed in city where i live.
edit: number seemed to have increased from the last time i viewed it.

The guy I mentioned in the neighboring complex is literally right next door to the high school campus. Then again he is listed in the "Non-Compliant" section so maybe he isn't supposed to be there.

I remember checking that like an year ago when there was a similar topic about it.

There's a guy on there that's like an apartment complex away from me, which doesn't make sense to me since there's an elementary school literally across the street from us >_>

yeah I had to check and apparently in my state there aren't laws against it. its like the one thing we don't need to be liberal about, but so many residences are near schools that people would probably never be able to find a place to live

It doesn't happen though. If it's just public urination, it's usually a misdemeanor charge and you pay a fine.
More often it's someone deliberately exposing themselves who give the excuse "I was just peeing"

No, can't say I really care.

Honestly, I'm not even sure if I agree with the idea of a sex offender registry, from a purely theoretical/high minded legal point of view.

Yeah, public urination is typically only a misdemeanor. The only way you get on the sex offender list is if you were rather deliberately exposing yourself for a lengthy amount of time, and the excuse of "I was just peeing" happened to be right there. Obvious judgment tends to be used in such instances, since there's clearly a difference between, say... A drunk person peeing on the side of a building, mostly out of sight, versus... Somebody with their junk out for all to see. Your average person, even drunk, doesn't just pee out in the open, they do so facing a wall/away from people.

I did know a guy who had a drunken piss in an alley and got caught and then had a criminal record that cost him his job as a teacher and barred him from any others because it was considered a sexual offence. This was in the UK though.

Yes, I checked before we moved here. There are 4. Three weren't against children, though. But that one is at least 'average risk', and not high risk. I'm more concerned about the ones who haven't been caught yet, if there are any.

Maybe someone can correct me if I'm outdated on some of these things, but many of the restrictions seem to make trying to live your life after prison very very restrictive. Housing requirements for example. It's a level of post prison punishment that hinders a successful attempt at reintegration into the community.

I am extremely uncomfortable now there are 189 offenders around my location almost all of them are are people convicted of sexual offenses against children and there are a shitload of schools around here, one location has freaking 12 of them around a school

the others are sexual battery and assault and only 1 is rape. and one of these perverts is 2 houses down from me.

With all due respect, crimes that get you on the sex offender list aren't victimless crimes. If you commit said crimes, then, yes, you should expect to have atleast a bit of a more restrictive time to reintegrating into society. If the idea of "People know when you committed crimes that netted you on the sex offender list" harms your own quality of life, well... Don't commit those crimes.

Like, we're not talking smoking weed, here. Crimes that get you on the sex offenders' list are... Quite specific. They seem like crimes that "Don't commit these crimes" is an incredibly reasonable stance to take. And if you DO commit said crimes, you've kinda... Forfeited the right to that specific kind of privacy. People have a right to know.

No I get that. I guess I'm just like, if we don't think they'll successfully go back into society, why even let them out in the first place.

For all practical purposes, I'm probably not against it, but I'm not a fan of the idea behind it I guess.

You're looking at it as all or nothing. It's not that they can't successfully go back to society, it's just that... When they reenter society, people deserve said knowledge about what they did. Likewise, for the criminals, they deserve the chance to reenter society, even if with restrictions.

I'm gonna have to bow out of this conversation, because it's rather emotionally charged, for me.

People suggesting it's somehow unfair for people to know when a convicted sex offender lives near their family is just... Wild, to me. If said sex offender didn't want people to know they're a sex offender, they should have, you know, not been a sex offender. Again, this isn't smoking weed, or even petty theft. Being a sex offender means you committed one of a very specific set of crimes, virtually none of them victimless.

I'm all for there needing to be some way to help criminals reintergrate into society but rapists and child molesters I have no sympathy for. (And when I say rape with an adult I mean forcible) as I believe it's very hard to rehabilitate these people as the problem I do feel is a mental problem.

As for the argument on the public urination thing I'll just throw out it's up to the cops discretion on what they charge you with.

Working where I work I've literally read case files stating the cops where unsure at the time what they wanted to charge the juvenile with. And it was a case what the kid did could easily be charged with multiple different charges for the one thing but they are opting to only slap him with one. With public urination it's your word against the cops.
I put my heart and soul into my work and I fear I have lost my mind in the process
