I'm jelly, the nearest farm is expensive as hell and they don't even do jerky.
It sounds gruesome but I love walking into my local locker and when they walk in the back seeing multiple cows hanging there.
Everything is so fresh and cut daily. Plus I just enjoy the fact that every kicker has their own blend and recipe for jerky, sausage, bratwurst, and so many different blended meats that give it a distinct flavor. There are hundreds and hundreds of these lockers are over so you can try so many different lockers and find something you like.
They also process your deer as well if you hunt and bring in the deer to have it made into deer sticks, ground burger, summer sausage, bologna or whatever. Its so awesome.
You can buy animals directly from farmers like cows, pigs, and sheep and have them processed at a locker. You need a space to be able to store them like a deep freeze but if you have the room and are ok with paying a chunk of money upfront it can be much cheaper to do.
Like buying a half a beef (cow) and getting it processed. Youll spend probably $1,000+ but you will end up with like 250 pounds of meat. A variety of roasts, steaks, and of course hamburger but your entire haul might average out to like $4 a pound. It ends up being a cheaper way to get meat if you like to eat all those different cuts.
Not to get off topic but I also get my milk from a local dairy and its creamline milk. Non homogenized whole creamline milk. The type you have to shake well before pouring because the cream separates. Its sooooooo good. I love living in such a heavy farming state.
