Thought I would post this, because Carini has been getting a lot of shit for her immediate reaction.

Italian boxer Angela Carini, who abandoned her Olympic bout against Algeria's Imane Khelif inside 46 seconds, says she "wants to apologise" to her opponent for how she handled the moments after the fight.
Khelif is one of two athletes who have been cleared to compete in the women's boxing in Paris, despite having been disqualified from last year's Women's World Championships for failing to meet eligibility criteria.
The 25-year-old's participation in the Games has proved controversial, leading the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to defend her right to compete.
"All this controversy makes me sad," Carini told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I'm sorry for my opponent, too. If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision."
Carini, also 25, said abandoning the fight had been a mature step to take, but she expressed regret at not shaking hands with Khelif afterwards.
"It wasn't something I intended to do," Carini said. "Actually, I want to apologise to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke."
She added that if she met Khelif again, she would "embrace her".

She did the right thing in pulling out if she felt she was overmatched, and she's done the right thing here. Pretty sure we can understand if someone doesn't say the right things on a moment of crushing disappointment.

She didn't help the situation though. Her behavior was horrendous. But yes. At least she realized that and is apologizing now.
I kind of have to wonder at what point does the "unfair" part of the advantage kick in and what part it doesn't. If we're now putting cisgender women who have a DSD through some sort of bizarre "not woman enough" purity test, how is that supposed to work? What even is the criteria? Is there one, or are people just fucking mad that she looks butch?

People can say she had an unfair advantage all they want, but if they can't define what makes someone a woman to the point that they're now wanting to exclude literally cis women with DSDs in that category...well it's just fucking sad.

If that's going to be anyone's argument, they need to commit to saying we should do away with social gendered categories like male and female and just go in with sports categories that attempt to proximately level some amount of androgenisation. Yes, it's ridiculous, but at least it would be consistent.

It wasn't 'horrendous'. It was pretty much what you would expect.

You have to understand that these people train for 4 years, and then a few seconds after their dream dies, some journalist puts a microphone in their face and starts firing questions.

While we sit on our arses and pass judgement as to whether they have shown sufficient grace in the moment. Hell, if they apologize at length later, we may even deign to grudgingly accept it.

This isn't the only instance of it happening in these Olympics. I've seen athletes in tears after some dick with a microphone demands to know 'why performances haven't been good enough', or can you describe your disappointment'. They need to back off.

The problem with this, is the right and bigots in general have no problem attacking people based on nothing, then making people villains who never deserved to be considered such.

This woman was going through some shit and the right clamped on and essentially made her a victim when she didn't ask for that and ultimately made her a villain in others eyes.

She didn't go full Riley Gaines and become a piece of shit for fame.

Sometimes people are really just built different. Then sometimes women are competing on steroids like Kris Cyborg and Gabi Garcia. I wonder if the Transvestigators even know about Gabi, she's absolutely gigantic. Don't hear Joe Rogan discuss about a 14 stone, 6 foot 3 woman competing in BJJ with women smaller than her.

In any case, like people said this shit was going to lead to women being questioned on if they were really women. Absolute clownery trying to use a corrupt bribe taking boxing commission run by Russians as "proof" of anything.

A (very) small part of the problem here is the IOC has really botched their response. All they need to do is come out and say that all women boxing must have testosterone below an internationally and scientifically accepted threshold and all boxers currently competing are either within that threshold or on testosterone suppression to get below it.

Instead, every time they're asked they just say that all boxers have met all criteria, but they won't say what the criteria is, while also saying that testosterone levels isn't a be-all-end-all and they won't be releasing any medical information. Given that the IOC only recently took over boxing after kicking the IBA out, there is a small possibility that these boxers aren't under any kind of testosterone suppression and are fighting at 30 times the T levels of their opponents.

Part of the issue is the IOC for sure.

They avoided every part of the transpersons in sports discussion and said "we don't care, that is supposed to be handled by the government bodies of the respective sports", and the result is now that the IOC had neither rules nor discussion for any scenario at all, after they kicked out the IBA.

Right now they say "only the gender in passport matters, nothing else", but they wont be able to stand by this until the next games in 2028.

Pretty good nuance take here. Yeah it was at the moment type of interview. I felt something like this before when I competed at a kickboxing tournament, in my high school year, only for me to get wiped out at the top 4 by someone just dominating me at everything. I felt like crap, like all that work you put into the sport/craft just goes up in flames at a moments notice. I guess I was lucky that I didn't get interviewed immediately afterwards or I would've given a salty answer. How much I've grown as a person to what I used to be in highschool where I was so try hard in everything I did. I had to be the best at it and if I wasn't it would get to my self-esteem that I wasn't good enough.

But yeah it's unfortunate she's being used as a tool from the right wing politics to spread misinformation like the other lady she fought is "trans" when she's from Algeria that is known to be a rather conservative as fuck country. I seriously doubt they would want someone "trans" to represent them.

Tricky because testosterone is just used as a proxy for this stuff and doesn't accurately account for how well it works per person (I.e. it'd not just testosterone, it's androgenisation).

But yeah they're being deliberately mystifying about itn

She didn't specifically say anything. She cried and said her opponent was too strong and her nose got injured, and that's why she quit the fight.

Right wing media ran with this and started saying her opponent was a man

The boxer in question realized how people were running with it and almost immediately apologized going "No no no, that's not what I meant. I was emotional. I support her completely."

But of course now said people are ignoring her

This all could have been prevented if she'd have just shaken the woman's hand but she was such a sore fucking loser that she couldn't manage to do that. It's very magnanimous of her to apologize days after she created the controversy, but I suspect that her apology is less about instigating the harassment of Kheif and more about her (Carini) being made into an unwilling martyr for a cause that is being trumpeted by some explicitly repugnant people.

Just saying that Simone Biles is regularly beating out her second-place competitor by margins of one to SEVERAL points, which should be nearly impossible at the Olympic level. Places 2-8 are usually within one point of each other. This while being a good bit older than the usual gymnast range.

Yet no one throws a fit about her having some "biological advantage," despite the fact she clearly has one of some description.

Nor did anyone throw a fit about Michael Phelps, with his wild arms, huge feet, and abnormally low lactic acid buildup, all of which gave him an inborn biological advantage his competition could never replicate.

Could it be that the whole reason people are singling out this boxer, who has MANY losses to other women on her record... is because she looks butch? But that would mean they're pieces of shit! Perish the thought!

Well Simone biles "looks" like a female. Looked it up and Katie ledecky has had man accusations thrown at her. The Williams sisters also always get called dudes. For being so sure if themselves, the right aren't very good at picking out who is an actual man or not.
