Alien: Romulus. Hit or miss? ***SPOILERS***

I think it's the best Alien movie since Aliens.
Some of the tie-ins to the first movie didn't entirely land for me, and the "second ending" was just laughably unnecessary.
***BIG SPOILERS*** They really should have just ended with everyone jumping into the cryo pods, and left the question about the pregnancy unanswered . The Alien-human hybrid was stupid.
I land on it's OK, but leans more towards a hit than a miss. Your thoughts? PLEASE mark spoilers.
It is impossible to live in the past, difficult to live in the present, and a waste to live in the future.

My Letterboxd review:

The best addition to the franchise since Aliens, and the most terrifying since the OG. As with most Alien movies, it still suffers from an occasionally inscrutable script and a certain sense of deja vu, as this has (mostly) been seen before. But that doesn't matter too much as Alvarez gives it the jolt it needs, with some awesome production design and further proof that Cailee is fantastic.

my personal updated list of Alien movies from best to worst:

Aliens
Prometheus
Alien Covenant
Alien Romulus
Alien
Alien Resurrection
Alien vs Predator
Alien vs Predator: Requiem

Now or never.
It is great. Best movie since Aliens. Initial buildup was good as was showing the horrible state of the future for regular people. Nice references to other movies. I guess the last 10 minutes is getting hate on, but I thought that was nightmare fuel done right.

I really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun once shit started happening.

It had too many climaxes though. Felt like 4.
lolAmerica
I was stoned watching it on opening night and the ending was so anxiety inducing lol. I was way too high for that shit
Started from the bottom now we here
The last part of the movie had my whole theater screaming throughout the transformation so idk, that shit worked. I thought it was great.

Just to emphasize, there wasn't a peep in my theater until the birth scene. Then it was just chaos until the end.

i loved it. 8/10.

I also think Prometheus and Covenant are underrated.

If you've seen Prometheus, you know where the human hybrid is from.

Less is more. Everything you want, isn't everything you need.
The ending was pure balls out horror and I wished so much more of the movie was like that. It was very polished, but tame. Felt like a Rogue One of the Alien franchise imo. The guy who played idk Andy was incredible.

Black goo coming back was beyond stupid. They took the worst lore of the prequels and retconned everything else. Unfathomable that it returns yet again to create some stupid hybrid, but also inexplicably gets insta-deleted from the lore again right after in Aliens? They really need to close the loop on these Prometheus threads, man.
Since only from below can one better see the heights.

Just saw it a 2nd time, loved it. They tried to cram in too many callbacks from the older movies but that doesn't stop it from being a fun ride.

What the fuck is this shit?
Definite hit. Easily leapfrogged the previous 2 actual Alien movies and was far and away better than the last 2 Ridley shit fests.
Rage is a hell of an anesthetic.
I'm not really feeling the zoomer cast. Feels like it was made for zoomers and I'm old now.

Just looked it up. Looks like Sigourney was 29 when Alien was filmed and Cailee was 25. Pretty close. Cailee looks soooo young though.

She was 28. 2 years older than the main character of this one.

She was pushing 30 when it hit theaters anyway. The one in this just turned 26 and the whole cast looks like teenagers.

I thought it was pretty good. Didn't blow me away, but I think it was worth a watch.

I think it's the best Alien film we've had in a long time. Alien and Aliens are still undoubtably top, but I think Romulus has earned it's spot amongst them.

I didn't mind the re-introduction of the Black Goo. Nor do I really see it as a retcon. In Covenant, it seems to put forward the idea that David invents (or thinks he does) the Xenomorph as we know it. However Prometheus clearly shows the likeness of a Xeno on the wall of the Black Goo Chamber. This film seems to go back to the idea that it's the Black Goo that causes the Aliens. People seem to think that this retcons Covenant, but I just think it puts down the idea that David was using the Goo (he had access to a whole ship cargo of it) to make what he thought were original creatures, but in actuality everything he made was simply based around what the Goo was already primed to produce.

This all sounds about right. I never understood all the retcon complaints

I liked the young actors for the most part. They all played their parts perfectly imo. Dora the Explorer did a great job. Her and Andy were the stand out performances to me.

Kind of interesting that the Red Letter Media guys hated it. I feel like normally they're pretty in tune with audience reception but they ripped it apart.

They seem to be sick of ancient franchises churning out sequel number 8 etc

Solid 8.5/10 for me. Definitely a hit. The downside to an otherwise great movie is, as other reviewers and posters here have said, the last 10 minutes. I really thought we were trying to distance ourselves from Prometheus/Covenant with this one. >_>
Hmm...
I say hit!
Nothing super new, a lot we see before, but done really well with a few new things. Loved that zero-g gravity bit! Maybe a bit too much call-backs.

Just finished watching it. I say it's a Hit.

Characters were fine for the most part. I try not to stack them against the Marines because, c'mon, Hudson alone clears most humans not named "Ripley". I wish there was a bit more time to get to know them but movies aren't so slow paced anymore.

Some creepy moments, especially toward the end. Overall good movie.

Eh Id give it a 7/10. I enjoyed it for the most part and it was awesome as a life long fan of the alien franchise and seeing the inspiration from Isolation. The visuals were cool and I think they handled the face huggers really well.

Although since they started making more movies they keep trying to recreate Ripley and failing worse each time although I thought Rain was better than the woman from covenant.

The characters as a whole were pretty weak and I felt like once again the android stole the show. The ending also felt kind of shitty. Its like Disney doesnt think the movie can just end with a Xenomorph.
The night brims with defiled scum, and is permeated by their rotten stench.
Just think. Now you're all set to hunt and kill to your heart's content.

i giggled with excitement the first time you see the phone/save point and my friends had no idea why. Explained it to them afterward but I loved all of the callbacks.

Rain emerging from the elevator, pulse rifle drawn, with the emergency lights flashing in the background gave me chills too.

The iconic line: Get away from her, you bitch!

Me: he said the thing!

Even if it was CGI, seeing another model that looked like Ash .

I loved the fan service here far more than I usually do.
Hmm...
The ending encounter makes sense if you watched Prometheus

Nah, the "Ash" was cool. It was the execution of it that was meh.

The line though, I wasn't a big fan of.

ngl, these were the only things about the movie I kinda didn't like, especially that mid Ash model in action. It looked better at the end when it's talking via video conference on a screen than it did in the same room with the other actors, though.

Solid 8/10 for me, first proper Alien film since the original two.

I'd have preferred if he kept it to just get away from her! That was about the only one I groaned at a little.
