I still dont understand why milk and bread is such a hot commodity during snowstorms lol >_> I personally dont eat either one of those. I only use milk for cooking but that's rare that I use a recipe that requires it

It is going to snow tommorow in my city as well. I went to two grocery stores this morning and there was less than 5 people inside in both.

Maybe it was because I went at 7-8am and people still asleep at that time on Sundays.
Hey now.
And thanks to climate change, those super rare events are becoming more common and way, way worse.

Both items can make several times of meals. Like you can use milk for cereal or for cooking other items. You can make all kinds of sandwiches with bread. Or just use it to put butter/jam on it and eat.

Or getting ready for church.
Insert some witty line here
As someone who lives in a location that is prone to blizzards, its because there is a good chance the roads will be beyond screwed up for the next several hours, and its better to be prepared having excess toilet paper than question whether or not your going to end up in a "shitty" situation.
It's been pretty packed today, people are buying dumb shit, and the lowest it's supposed to get this week is 33...

Yeah I don't miss living in a place that shows. Los Angeles really spoiled me when it comes to the weather.
DI MOLTO!
In winter 94, it snowed almost 4 feet where I lived. We didn't have electtic for a week. It was well below zero a few times at night. Many roads were impassable. Parts of the county had no electric for almost two weeks.

There is nothing wrong with being prepared. Herd mentality surging to the store is dumb but reasonable prep before a potential weather event is perfectly rational and should be encouraged. Herd thinking should be discouraged

Im just talking about herd mentality when the forceast is 4 inches, not legit blizzard forecasts >_> Why are people changing the parameters of the argument to suit their views lol

Depends. If the streets ice over, it's a much bigger deal, and that can stick around for days in some places.

Honestly its because people are fucking idiots.
You don't need a license to drive a sandwich
I also need to make note that the further you are from a place that has regular snow, the more of a panic it will become.
I dont like driving for days after it snows. People are idiots and either drive like maniacs or will drive too slow and get stuck on hills.

We usually dont get a decent snow but every few years so my emergency supplies have either been eaten or have expired. We just buy stuff when it comes up.

We just plan to hunker down for a few days until things blow over and try and buy enough to last in case a nuclear apocalypse occurs as well.
Let's get down to brass tacks. How much for the ape?
It's kind of a prisoner's dilemma. If a snow storm is going to land around the time you usually grocery shop you risk not being able to buy stuff. You are incentivized to buy early so you are guaranteed to be able to get perishables.

I think a lot of people missed that you specified a certain amount in the opening post, I did at first because 4 inches of snow doesn't cause that kind of rush at grocery stores here, so my brain was automatically thinking of the amount of snow that would.

It actually has more drawn out extremes from my knowledge and experience.
i live in Seattle and the last time we have had any snow was winter 2018. Snow was replaced by rain.
It's a perfect example of the phrase, "better safe than sorry".

I was in an ice storm about a decade ago, lost power for 4 days. if it hadn't been for the generosity of my neighbors, I would have been sitting in the dark with no food by the 3rd day.
Why dont you have non-perishable food in reserve in the 1st place at all time? >_> Why put yourself in that position of vulnerability?

In my case it was because I had just relocated to a new area for work and hadn't established myself yet.

I'm like that too. I always have a surplus of everything in my pantry and probably have food for at least 2 weeks at anytime if I had to hunker down. Do people normally not do that and just buy for a few days at a time with nothing in reserve? >_>

Been doing that because my late parents always told me "You never know...." and I am screaming the same tune in 2025. I shop double, pantry and perishable, usually I almost always never have to bother refilling the pantry unless I need maybe a few items low on because for the most part the pantry is stacked. Perishable, I like to cook, others don't, so I'll get maybe $50 worth of red meat, seafood, lunchmeat, and dairy. The rest is deal specials I come across on frozen junk.

The people in my city behave like animals in the store on any given day. Its like a feeding frenzy of sharks grabbing everything off the shelves the second they stock it. You have to go to like three stores to get a small list of groceries. You cant use grocery pickup because they will literally give you the worst produce they can find to move it.

We didn't have electtic for a week

i know that pain, it sucked. back in 2007 there was a nasty storm that came through and messed up all the trees and power lines. it took 6 days to get power in town (7 for the boonies) lost a whole month of frozen meat because of that.

People where I live will go out when they want to go out, weather be damned. 6 inches of snow and ice on the roads, traffic is the same as a clear 70 degree day.
Every day I wake up and promise I will be nice to everyone, then I deal with people at work and remember why that will never happen.
